Anti-tarnish coating on jewellery: what it is and how long it lasts

An anti-tarnish coating is a clear protective layer over the plating. It slows colour change, but its life depends on the coating type, wear and care.

An anti-tarnish coating is a thin, clear layer applied over the plating to keep air, moisture and sweat away from the metal. It slows the darkening of gold, rose gold and silver finishes, but it does not stop it for ever.

How long it lasts depends on the coating type, how thick it is, which part of the piece rubs against skin, and how the customer stores and cleans it. No honest maker can give a single figure.

Common types of coating

  • Clear lacquer, dipped or sprayed: the most common and cheapest. Coverage can be uneven in recesses and on edges.
  • E-coating: a clear coat applied electrically, which gives a thinner and more even film.
  • Chemical anti-tarnish treatment: a dip that forms an invisible protective film on silver or copper-rich surfaces, often used together with a lacquer.

What shortens its life

  • Friction on ring bands, bangle edges, clasps and the back of pendants.
  • Perfume, hairspray, lotion and household cleaners.
  • Swimming pools, sea water and showering with the jewellery on.
  • Storage in humid, open air rather than in a sealed bag.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning or abrasive polishing cloths.

Realistic expectations

As a rough guide, a coating protects best on pieces worn occasionally, such as bridal and festive sets, and wears off first on rings and bangles worn daily. On high-contact areas, a basic lacquer may start to wear within months of regular use, while on a necklace worn for events it can last much longer.

Because life varies so much, it is better to agree a test than a promised number of months. Ask the maker for a sample that has been through an accelerated test, such as a salt spray or artificial sweat test, and compare it with your approved sample.

What this means for a buyer

Write the coating type into your order, check it is applied evenly on samples, and give customers simple care instructions. Pack pieces in anti-tarnish bags so the coating is not doing all the work in storage. Our guide to common quality problems covers what happens when coatings are skipped.
