ASTM F2999 is the US consumer safety specification for adult jewellery, the counterpart to ASTM F2923 for children's pieces. It is voluntary, but many US retailers and some marketplaces require suppliers to meet it, so for a wholesale buyer it often works like a rule.
Its main focus is heavy metals, especially lead and cadmium, in the metal parts and coatings of jewellery intended for adults.
Why adult jewellery needs a standard at all
Federal lead limits under CPSIA apply to children's products. Adult jewellery is outside that rule, which left a gap. Some states, especially California, filled it with their own laws, and the industry wrote F2999 so that retailers had one consistent test to ask for.
Adult jewellery still ends up in children's hands, and cheap alloys can contain high levels of lead or cadmium. Retailers use F2999 to manage that risk and to protect their brand.
How it applies to Rajkot imitation jewellery
- Brass and copper bases generally test well when the metal is clean and sourced from known suppliers.
- Zinc alloys, solders and recycled scrap are the usual sources of lead and cadmium, so they need more care.
- Coatings, lacquers and enamel are tested too, not just the metal.
- Stones and glass are usually not the problem, but glass with lead content can be, so ask the lab.
How to use it in your buying
Name F2999 in your purchase order if you sell adult jewellery in the US, alongside any state requirements and your retailer's own limits. Test the approved sample, then test production at a frequency your retailer or your risk level calls for. Ask the lab to confirm the current version of the standard, because ASTM standards are revised from time to time.
If you also sell in the EU, add nickel release testing. F2999 does not replace EU REACH, which has its own nickel, lead and cadmium limits.
What this means for a buyer
For adult ranges sold in the US, F2999 plus the relevant state rules is a sensible baseline, and it protects you if a retailer audits your files. Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We check which alloys and solders your maker uses, arrange testing at accredited labs and make sure the bulk matches the tested sample. Start with a free sourcing review.
