Best country to import tiles from: how India compares

There is no single best country to import tiles from. Match origin to product, quality tier and market, then test factories. Here is how India fits.

The best country to import tiles from depends on what you sell. Italy and Spain lead on premium design and brand recognition, China on scale and technology, and India on range, flexible quantities and value in vitrified, porcelain and outdoor tiles. Turkey and Vietnam suit specific regional markets.

Rather than ranking countries, rank your own needs: product, quality tier, order size, lead time and the rules of your destination.

Step 1: define the product and tier

Start with the exact product: glazed vitrified, double-charge, full-body, wall tile, outdoor paver, slab or sanitaryware. Then fix the quality tier, such as premium, standard or commercial, as explained in tile grades. Different origins cluster at different tiers. A country is strong for a product, not for tiles in general.

Step 2: compare origins on what matters

Use the same checklist for every origin so the comparison is fair.

  • Range and design turnover: can the cluster give you new designs often, and can a factory print them to order?
  • Technical match: do the factories meet the standard your market uses, such as ISO 13006, EN 14411 or ANSI A137.1?
  • Order flexibility: what minimum quantity applies per design and per container?
  • Freight and lead time: how long from order to arrival at your port?
  • Trade rules: duties, anti-dumping measures and conformity marks for your market, confirmed with your broker.
  • Supplier depth: how many audited factories could you move between?

Where does India stand?

India's tile industry is concentrated around Morbi in Gujarat, with a full local supply chain and two major ports within a few hours' drive, as described in why Morbi is a world tile hub. That structure gives buyers a wide choice of plants and a cost position that often undercuts European tiles for comparable looks, covered in why Morbi tiles cost less than European tiles.

The weakness is variation. Plants differ widely, so a buyer who picks the wrong one can receive mixed grades. The origin is less important than the factory.

Step 3: test before you commit

Whatever origin you choose, run a trial. Request samples, have them tested, and place one container with strict shade and calibre control before you scale. Compare Morbi tiles with China, Spain and Vietnam and keep a second origin ready if volume matters.

How do you shortlist origins?

Write down your specification once and send it to factories in two or three origins. Compare what comes back: samples, test reports, minimum quantities, lead times and how quickly each supplier answers questions. A supplier who responds clearly and sends complete documents is showing you how the relationship will run. Then place a small trial order from the best two. After that, decide with evidence from your own warehouse, not from a ranking. Keep in mind that your own customers decide which tile sells, so involve your sales team in judging samples before you choose.
