The cumin harvest season in Gujarat falls in the spring, after a winter growing period. Psyllium is also a winter crop, harvested around the same time. Groundnut harvest in Gujarat follows the monsoon, so the main crop arrives in the autumn. The best time to buy cumin is usually after new-crop quality is visible and before your own stocks run low, not at a date picked from the calendar.
Dates move with sowing and weather, so confirm them with a supplier each year.
When is the cumin harvest, and when should you buy?
Cumin is sown in the cool season and harvested in roughly February to April, with the main arrivals reaching Unjha market soon after. See the Indian spice harvest calendar for the full pattern.
Buyers often wait until new-crop arrivals show quality before committing. Early lots can be damp or mixed, and fully dried, cleaned lots come a little later. A buyer with no stock may have to buy early. A buyer with stock can wait. A guide to the trade-offs is in the best time to book agri contracts in India.
When is the psyllium harvest?
Psyllium in north Gujarat and Rajasthan is sown in the cool season and harvested in the spring. Seed then goes to mills, where it is cleaned and milled into husk through the year. This means husk supply from a given crop is stretched over many months. Weather at harvest, especially rain, decides how much of the crop is good quality.
For a first purchase, ask the mill whether the husk comes from the current crop or from stock, and ask for the mill's own test results.
What is the groundnut harvest season in Gujarat?
Gujarat's main groundnut crop is grown in the monsoon and harvested in the autumn. A smaller summer crop is grown in some areas under irrigation and harvested earlier in the year. Supply therefore comes in two waves. The detail for the main growing area is in the groundnut harvest season in Saurashtra.
Moisture and aflatoxin risk are higher when the harvest is wet, and lots dried on the ground in damp weather are the most exposed. Ask when the lot was harvested, how it was dried and when it was last tested.
How to choose your buying window
Work backwards from your own needs. Decide how many months of stock you want to hold, when your last stock will run out and how long a first order takes, as covered in how long the first agri order takes to ship. Then book early enough that quality checks and loading are not rushed.
A supplier who offers fixed supply across the year should be able to show stock or a plan for it. Cost differences through the year come from crop size, storage and demand, and a quote tied to a shipment month is the only way to see them.
