Buying castings and forgings from India: how a first order works

A first casting or forging order runs from drawing to pattern or die, to sample, to approval, to production. Here is what happens at each step and what you control.

Castings from India and Indian forgings for export follow the same path: a drawing, tooling, a sample, approval and then production. Plan the first order around that sequence rather than around the quote alone.

Gujarat has foundries in and around Rajkot and Ahmedabad that make grey iron, SG iron and steel castings, and forging shops that make open-die and closed-die parts. Your drawing decides which process fits.

What do you send to start?

Send a drawing in PDF and a 3D file where you have one, the material grade, the annual quantity, the weight and any machining and finish. What to send for an engineering quote lists the full set.

Name the grade in a standard, not in words. Casting grades explained shows how Indian and European names map. If you leave the grade open, quotes will not be comparable.

How does tooling work?

Castings need a pattern; forgings need dies. Tooling is usually a separate line in the quote, and the owner of the tooling should be written into the contract. Pattern cost and ownership explains what to ask.

A new casting often takes several weeks to reach a first sample, as covered in developing a new casting. Forging dies take similar planning. Ask for a dated plan with the sample date, not a single lead-time figure.

How do you approve the first sample?

Approve in writing against a checklist. At minimum, ask for these:

  • A dimensional report on the first pieces against the drawing, with the tolerance class stated.
  • A material certificate with chemistry and mechanical properties from a spectrometer and tensile test.
  • Hardness readings and, for forgings, the heat treatment record.
  • Non-destructive testing where the part is pressure-bearing or safety-critical.

What do you do after approval?

Keep the approved sample as a master and refer production to it. Lots should carry heat or batch numbers that link back to the certificate. A first container often looks better than the fifth, so read why quality drops after the first container before you release volume.

Cost depends on weight, grade, tooling, yield, machining and packing. Your real quote comes from a specification and a sourcing review, not a general rate.

Which process suits which part?

Process choice follows shape, quantity and strength. Sand casting suits larger, simpler parts in grey or SG iron; shell moulding and investment casting give finer detail and surface for smaller parts. Sand casting versus shell moulding and investment castings compare them.

Forging gives a grain flow that follows the part shape and is chosen where fatigue strength matters. Open-die versus closed-die forging shows when each is used, and heat treatment for forgings explains why the treatment record matters.

Ask the supplier why it proposes a process. A good one will tell you what changes if the quantity doubles, which is a useful test of whether the firm understands your part.

Plan the logistics early. Castings and forgings are heavy for their volume, so a container fills by weight long before it fills by space. Ask the supplier to propose a loading plan, with pallets or crates that can be lifted by forklift, and to mark each with the part number, quantity and lot. Bare iron and steel rust quickly at sea, so agree a rust-preventive coating or oil and moisture protection.
