Fasteners from India: grades, standards and how to order

Order fasteners by standard, property class and coating, not by name. Ask for batch certificates, head marking and a mechanical test before the first container.

To buy fasteners from India safely, order by dimensional standard, property class and coating, and ask for a batch certificate. A bolt called high tensile by one supplier may be a different strength from another's.

Indian fastener makers supply bolts, nuts, studs, screws and anchors in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel, in metric and inch sizes.

What do grade marks mean?

Metric steel bolts are marked with a property class on the head, such as 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9. The first number relates to tensile strength and the second to yield ratio. Fastener grades and standards goes through the systems, including inch grades and stainless marks.

A mark is a claim, not proof. Only a tensile and hardness test on your own sample confirms it.

What should an order say?

Write the following on every line item:

  • The dimensional standard, such as ISO, DIN or ASME, with size and thread pitch.
  • The property class or material grade, such as stainless A2 or A4.
  • The coating and thickness requirement, such as zinc plating, hot-dip galvanising or black oxide.
  • The marking, packaging unit and carton labelling.
  • The test certificate type, tied to the batch.

How do you check a batch?

Ask for dimensional checks with go and no-go gauges, a hardness test, a tensile or proof-load test for critical grades, and a coating thickness reading. Plating on high-strength bolts needs care, because some processes can make steel brittle, so ask how the maker controls that risk.

Sampling plans such as those discussed in AQL for engineering components set how many pieces to check. Keep a retained sample from each batch.

Where do fasteners come from?

Fasteners: bolts, nuts, studs and anchors describes what Gujarat and the wider industry make. Many suppliers are traders, so confirm who forges, threads and plates. Trader or manufacturer gives the checks.

Cost depends on grade, size, coating and quantity, so a real quote needs your list. Structural or safety uses need approval under your own country's rules, so confirm with your engineer or regulator.

How should you handle MOQs and mixed items?

Fasteners are made in large runs, so small custom sizes may have a high minimum quantity, while standard sizes can be bought in smaller lots from stock. Ask each supplier which items it keeps in stock and which it makes to order.

A mixed order of many sizes is possible, but each size should carry its own label with the standard, size, grade and batch number. MOQ for auto and industrial parts explains how volumes are normally set.

For fasteners that go into a vehicle or machine you sell, ask also for a batch retention plan, so you can trace a field problem back to the heat and the production day.

Packaging deserves a line in the order. Fasteners are heavy, and thin cartons split in transit and mix sizes. Ask for sturdy cartons on pallets, sealed bags per size, and labels that carry the grade and batch, so that a mix-up can be spotted at your warehouse door.
