Most chain types are available from Rajkot, either from chain makers who produce them by machine or from workshops that buy chain by the metre and fit clasps. The common types are cable, box, rope, curb, figaro, snake, ball and Singapore chain. They differ in look, strength, flexibility and how well they hold plating.
Chains are sold by type, thickness in millimetres, length and finish. Specify all four, as two chains called "box chain" can look very different.
The main chain types
- Cable: simple round or oval links. Cheap, light and the standard chain for pendants.
- Box: square links that form a smooth square-section chain. Strong for its weight and good for pendants.
- Rope: links twisted to look like rope. Catches light well; popular in men's and gold-look ranges.
- Curb: flattened links that lie flat. Common in men's chains and bracelets.
- Figaro: a pattern of short and long flattened links, usually three short to one long.
- Snake: smooth, round and flexible. Looks premium but can kink if bent sharply.
- Ball: small metal beads on a wire. Cheap, used for tags and casual pendants.
- Singapore: a twisted, sparkling chain that is thin but eye-catching.
Choosing thickness and length
Fine chains around 1 to 2 mm suit pendants and layered looks. Medium chains around 3 to 5 mm are worn alone, especially by men. Heavier chains use more metal, so their price follows brass or copper costs more closely. For lengths, see which necklace lengths to order.
Quality points
- Links are closed or soldered, with no gaps that open under strain.
- Snake and box chains have no kinks or flat spots.
- Plating is even inside twisted chains such as rope and Singapore.
- The clasp is strong enough for the chain's weight and plated to match.
- Length is measured with the clasp, the same way on every piece.
