What chemicals are made in Vapi, Ankleshwar, Dahej and Vadodara?

Vapi is strong in dyes and intermediates, Ankleshwar in dyes, agrochemicals and specialties, Dahej in petrochemicals and large specialty plants, and Vadodara in petrochemicals and fine chemicals.

Each of Gujarat's four best-known chemical centres has a different mix. Vapi leans to dyes, pigments and intermediates; Ankleshwar to dyes, agrochemicals and specialty chemicals; Dahej to petrochemicals and large export plants; Vadodara to petrochemicals, fertilisers and fine chemicals.

These are tendencies, not rules. Every estate has exceptions, and many companies run plants in more than one place.

Vapi

Vapi sits at the southern tip of Gujarat, close to Mumbai. Its estate is dense with small and mid-sized units. You will find reactive, acid and direct dyes, organic pigments, dye intermediates such as H-acid and vinyl sulphone, and paper and textile chemicals.

Many Vapi units are batch plants that can switch products. That flexibility suits custom shades and small runs, but it also means quality depends heavily on the individual plant.

Ankleshwar, Panoli and Jhagadia

Ankleshwar, across the Narmada from Bharuch, is often described as one of Asia's largest chemical estates. It makes dyes and intermediates, agrochemical technicals and formulations, and a wide spread of specialty and fine chemicals. Panoli and Jhagadia nearby host newer and often larger units, including agrochemical and specialty plants.

Dahej

Dahej is a coastal zone with its own port and a large petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals investment region. It hosts big continuous plants: chlor-alkali, petrochemical derivatives, and large agrochemical and specialty sites built for export. Its jetties handle liquid chemicals, which suits bulk and ISO tank business.

Vadodara

Vadodara grew around a refinery and petrochemical complex and older fertiliser plants. The city and the Nandesari estate to its north make petrochemical derivatives, solvents, fine chemicals and specialty products. Vadodara also has a strong engineering base, which matters if you need process equipment as well as chemicals.

Elsewhere in Gujarat

  • Kutch and the Bhavnagar coast produce salt, soda ash, caustic soda and bromine from sea brine.
  • Kutch also mines bentonite and other industrial minerals.
  • Ahmedabad's estates, such as Vatva and Naroda, have many small dye and chemical units.
  • Hazira, near Surat, has large petrochemical and industrial gas operations.

What to do with this

Use location as a starting filter, then check the plant itself. A company with a Vapi address may only have an office there. Read how to tell a chemical trader from a manufacturer before you shortlist. The chemicals we source page lists the product groups we cover.

How the clusters link up

The four centres trade with each other constantly. An intermediate made in Ankleshwar may become a dye in Vapi. Solvents and acids from Vadodara and Dahej feed batch plants along the whole corridor. This means a supply problem in one estate, such as a closure or a feedstock shortage, can show up as a price rise or delay in another. When you qualify a supplier, ask where its main inputs come from as well as where it makes the product. Two suppliers in different towns may share the same raw material source, which gives you less security than it seems.
