A choker is a necklace worn tight or close around the base of the neck, rather than hanging down onto the chest. In imitation jewellery, the main body of a choker is usually made around 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 cm) long, then finished with an extension chain or an adjustable cord at the back so that it fits a range of neck sizes.
The extension is what makes a choker sellable as one size. Without it you would need to stock several lengths of each design.
Two kinds of choker
Indian chokers are usually rigid or semi-rigid. A broad band of kundan, polki-look or American diamond work is shaped to the curve of the neck, and the back is closed with a dori, a braided thread with a sliding bead, so the wearer can tighten or loosen it. These are common in bridal and festive sets.
Western chokers are usually flexible: a velvet ribbon, a thin chain, a tennis-style line of stones or a collar of beads. They close with a lobster clasp and an extension chain of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm).
Sizing points to specify
- Inner length of the main body, measured along the inside curve, in cm.
- Length of the extension chain or dori, and how far it adjusts.
- Width or drop of the front panel, which affects comfort and how the piece sits.
- Weight of the finished piece, because heavy chokers feel uncomfortable over an evening.
- Whether you need a separate children's or plus-size version.
Common problems
The most common complaint is a choker that is too short once the clasp is closed. This happens when the maker measures the body only and forgets the clasp and jump rings, or when the extension is shorter than agreed. Rigid chokers can also pinch if the curve is too tight, and thread dori can fray or lose its colour.
Ask for the measurement to be taken with the piece closed at its smallest and largest settings, and check a few pieces from each lot against that figure.
What this means for a buyer
Put the inner length, extension length and weight on your purchase order, not just a photo. Creston & Co works for buyers only and checks these measurements on samples and on production pieces before packing. Ask for a free sourcing review.
