Custom packaging and labels for home textiles from India

Printed polybags, insert cards, belly bands, boxes, barcodes and care labels are all available from Indian units; here is how to specify them.

Yes, Indian home textile units routinely supply custom packaging and labelling, including printed polybags, insert cards, belly bands, boxes, barcode labels, care labels and retailer-specific compliance labelling. Most of it is sourced from local packaging printers and applied in the stitching unit, so the factory coordinates it but the buyer has to supply the artwork and the rules.

Packaging is where a good order is most often spoiled, because it is finalised last and checked least. Treating it as a separate specification with its own approval stage avoids most of the problems, and it also stops packaging from holding up a finished order.

What can be customised

  • Printed polybags, usually with a hanger hook or zip, a printed panel and a suffocation warning in the language of the destination market.
  • Insert cards and header cards showing the product image, size, fibre content and brand, slipped inside the bag or stitched to it.
  • Belly bands around folded sheets or towels, in card or fabric, printed with the brand and size.
  • Rigid or folding boxes for gift and premium sets, with or without a window.
  • Barcode labels with EAN or UPC codes, retailer item numbers and price tickets where the retailer requires them.
  • Care labels and content labels, sewn in, with fibre composition, care symbols, country of origin and importer details in the formats the destination market requires.
  • Outer cartons printed with the shipping marks, carton contents and barcodes that the retailer's distribution centre needs.

Compliance labelling

Each market has its own rules for fibre content, care instructions and origin marking, and large retailers add their own packaging manuals on top. The factory will follow what it is given, but it will not know your retailer's manual unless you send it. Supply the care symbol set, the language requirements and the label layout, and get the retailer to approve the label artwork before bulk printing.

Certification marks such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS can only be printed on packaging if the product and the supplier are actually certified and the licence number is shown, so confirm this before artwork is made.

Lead time and minimums

Printed packaging has its own minimum from the printer, which can be higher than the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for the textiles themselves on a small range, and it usually needs a few weeks from artwork approval to delivery at the stitching unit. Order it early, and ask for a packaging sample with the pre-production sample rather than at the end. Also check the carton size against the pallet or container plan, because a slightly oversized box can cost a layer in the container.

How we help

We visit the stitching units and the packaging printers they use, check artwork against your retailer's requirements, and send sealed product samples to an NABL-accredited lab where testing is needed to support a label claim. Before loading we check measurements, labels and packing against your specification, supervise the loading and send weekly updates.
