What is the difference between guar split, guar meal and guar gum powder?

Guar split is the separated endosperm of the seed. Guar meal is the husk and germ left over, sold as protein feed. Guar gum powder is the split hydrated and ground fine.

Guar split is the endosperm of the guar seed after the husk and germ have been removed. Guar meal is the husk and germ by-product, sold mainly as protein-rich animal feed. Guar gum powder is the split after it has been hydrated, flaked, ground and dried.

All three come from the same seed in the same plant. You buy split if you want to grind it yourself, powder if you want a ready ingredient, and meal only if you are in the feed trade.

How the seed is separated

A guar seed has three parts: the outer husk, the germ (embryo) and the endosperm in between. The endosperm holds the galactomannan gum. Processors split the seed mechanically, often after a heat or roasting step to loosen the husk, then sieve and grind to separate the parts. The yield of split from seed varies with seed quality and plant settings.

  • Husk: the seed coat, removed and sold with feed fractions.
  • Germ: rich in protein, sold as part of guar meal.
  • Endosperm: the split, which becomes guar gum.

Guar split

Split is traded as a semi-processed commodity. It is commonly sold as "refined guar split" when most of the husk and germ has been removed. Buyers are usually other grinders, inside India or abroad, who make their own powder grades.

Split quality is judged on purity (how little husk and germ remains), moisture, colour and the gum content it can deliver. A small amount of husk left on the split shows up later as dark specks, higher ash and lower viscosity in the powder.

Guar meal

Guar meal is the combined husk and germ, sometimes sold as separate fractions under local names such as korma and churi. It is a protein ingredient for cattle, poultry and fish feed. Feed buyers check protein, fibre, moisture and aflatoxin, and should confirm that the meal is permitted as a feed material in their market. Meal is not a substitute for gum and has almost no thickening value.

Guar gum powder

Powder is the finished product most food and industrial buyers want. The split is soaked, flaked, milled and dried, then sieved to a mesh size and blended to a viscosity grade. Food powder is then tested for microbiology and contaminants. Oilfield powder may be ground coarser or chemically modified.

When you compare offers, make sure you are comparing the same thing. Split, powder and derivatives sit at very different points in the value chain. A quote that looks cheap may simply be for a less processed product. See how to compare quotes from different Indian exporters.
