NABL does not test anything. It is the body that accredits labs in India. SGS and Eurofins are international testing groups, and their labs in India are often accredited by NABL themselves.
So the choice is not NABL versus SGS or Eurofins. It is one accredited lab against another, compared on the specific tests you need.
Three different things
- Accreditation body: NABL assesses labs against ISO/IEC 17025 and grants accreditation for a defined scope.
- Independent Indian labs: many Indian labs hold NABL accreditation for food and agri testing and work for exporters and buyers.
- International testing groups: groups such as SGS and Eurofins run labs in many countries, including India. Their Indian labs usually hold NABL accreditation for listed tests.
- Inspection services: some of these groups also offer sampling, inspection and loading supervision, which is a separate service from lab testing.
Why buyers sometimes prefer a named group
Some EU, UK and US customers name a lab group in their contract because they already know its reports and methods. A familiar format saves their QA team time. A group with labs in both India and your country can also make a dispute easier, because origin and destination results come from one system.
That is a reasonable preference. It is not proof that an independent NABL lab gives a less accurate result for the same test. If your customer names a lab, follow the contract. If not, choose on the points below and keep the same lab across seasons so results stay comparable.
What to compare instead of the name
- Scope: is your exact test, on your product type, accredited at that lab?
- Limit of quantification: is it low enough for the EU or US limit you must meet?
- Pesticide coverage: how many compounds does the multi-residue screen cover, and are single-residue methods available?
- Turnaround: how many working days, and is a faster service offered?
- Location: how quickly can sealed samples reach the lab from the factory?
- Verification: will the lab confirm a report's authenticity if you contact it directly?
When the lab choice really matters
Lab choice matters most for tests where methods vary, such as ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol, or very low-level pesticide work. It also matters when your contract says one lab's result is final. For a deeper look at reading the outcome, see what a lab certificate should show to be valid evidence.
Whichever lab you choose, the result is only as good as the sample. A sample handed over by the supplier tells you about that bag, not your lot.
How we help
We work with NABL-accredited labs, and we use a lab group your customer names when the contract requires it. We draw the sample from your lot and choose the lab by scope and limits, not by habit. Ask for a free sourcing review.
