To find genuine chemical manufacturers in Gujarat, build a long list from several sources, then check each name against documents that only a plant owner can hold. The finding is easy. The checking is where most buyers go wrong.
Online marketplaces will give you hundreds of names in minutes. Many of them are traders, some are brokers and a few are not real businesses at all.
Where to build the long list
- Export promotion council member directories, which list exporters by product group.
- Industry association member lists for dyes, agrochemicals and specialty chemicals.
- Trade fair exhibitor lists from Indian chemical shows.
- Import records and trade data services, which show who actually ships a product to your market.
- Recommendations from testing labs, packaging suppliers and freight forwarders who work with plants daily.
Checks that separate plants from offices
For each candidate, ask for documents that tie the company to a production site. A real manufacturer can usually supply these quickly:
- The GST registration, with the plant address listed as a place of business.
- The consent to operate from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, naming the products and permitted quantities.
- The factory licence for the site.
- Product-specific licences where they apply, such as agrochemical manufacturing registration.
- Recent batch records or a COA with a batch number you can later trace.
- Photos or a video call walking from the gate to the reactors, taken on the day you ask.
The pollution consent is especially useful. It lists the products a plant is allowed to make and the quantities. If your product is not on it, the plant cannot legally make it at scale, whatever the sales team says.
Red flags
- The company offers a very wide range across unrelated chemistry, from dyes to solvents to pharma intermediates.
- The address is an office in Ahmedabad, Surat or Mumbai with no plant address on any document.
- Samples arrive without a batch number, or the COA has a different company name.
- The seller avoids a site visit or proposes a different plant on the day.
- The quote is far below every other quote with no clear reason.
Visit before you commit
Nothing replaces seeing the plant. A visit shows you the reactors, the lab, the warehouse and the effluent plant. It also shows whether the product you want is actually running. Our guide to auditing a chemical plant in Gujarat lists what to look at, and what a factory audit should contain covers audits in general.
Traders are not always a problem. Some add value by holding stock or consolidating small lots. The issue is a trader presenting itself as the maker. See telling a chemical trader from a manufacturer.
How long the process takes
Expect screening to take several weeks for a new product. Building a long list is quick. Collecting documents from each candidate, checking them, arranging samples and visiting the best two or three takes longer, especially if plants are in different estates. Do not shorten the process by skipping the visit. A week spent on site saves months of trouble later. Keep notes on every candidate, including the ones you reject, so you have a ready reserve if your first choice cannot supply.
