Mundra is the main Gujarat port for reefer containers, with frequent services to the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Asia. Pipavav and Hazira also handle containers, and Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai is a common alternative for Gujarat shippers.
The best port for you depends on the shipping service to your destination, reefer equipment availability, plug-in capacity and the distance from the plant. Your forwarder should compare current options for each booking.
The main options
- Mundra: a large container port in Kutch with many mainline services. Most Gujarat frozen food exporters use it.
- Pipavav: a container port in Amreli district, closer to Saurashtra plants, with fewer services.
- Hazira: near Surat, convenient for plants in south Gujarat.
- Kandla (Deendayal): mainly a bulk and general cargo port, with more limited container services.
- Nhava Sheva (JNPT): India's busiest container port, near Mumbai, often used when a Gujarat port lacks the right service.
What to compare
A port with good facilities is only useful if the shipping line runs a suitable service from it. Compare these points for each shipment.
- Direct services or transhipment to your destination.
- Transit time and sailing frequency.
- Empty reefer availability at the depot, which changes by season.
- Plug-in points and power reliability at the terminal.
- Road distance and time from the plant, with a generator set.
- Cut-off times for reefers and how much plug-in time is free.
Distance from the plant
Most Gujarat frozen potato and vegetable plants are in north, central or south Gujarat. Road time to the port adds to the time the reefer runs on a generator set. Long trips are fine with a working generator, but they add cost and risk. A closer port with a weaker service is not always better.
Plan for the gate-in cut-off. Reefers usually need to reach the terminal some time before the vessel, and late arrival can mean waiting days for the next sailing while paying for power. Customs clearance and any inspections must also fit inside that window. Sea freight times from Mundra gives rough transit times.
Seasonal pressure
Reefer equipment can run short at times, as lines move empty containers to where demand is highest. Fruit and vegetable export seasons and holiday periods add pressure. Book early, and confirm the box is released to the plant in good time. Ask for the pre-trip inspection record when the empty box is collected, so a faulty unit is caught before it reaches the cold store. Gujarat ports for agri exports covers the ports more generally.
How we help
We work with your forwarder to choose the port and sailing, check reefer release and timing, and supervise loading at the plant. Seal numbers and temperature records reach you before the box leaves for the port. Ask for a free sourcing review.
