Handmade jewellery supplier in India: what handmade really means

How to tell genuinely handmade Indian jewellery from machine-made pieces sold as handmade, and what to ask a handmade jewellery supplier in India.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

Indian handmade jewellery is rarely made entirely by hand: most pieces combine machine casting or stamping with hand finishing, setting and assembly. When a handmade jewellery supplier in India uses the word, ask which steps are by hand, because the answer decides the price, lead time and what you can claim to your own customers.

There is no single legal definition of handmade in jewellery, so you need to define it in your order. Handmade versus machine-made imitation jewellery covers the range.

Which steps can be handmade?

Metal bodies are usually cast or stamped from dies. Casting, stamping and die-making explained shows how. Hand work typically comes in after that: filing, polishing, stone setting, enamel filling, wire wrapping, beading and assembly.

Some crafts are handmade from start to finish, such as beaded and thread jewellery, wire work and hand-set kundan. Others, like stamped chain, are machine-led. Asking about each step is more useful than asking if the piece is handmade.

How can you tell?

Look for signs on the sample and at the workshop:

  • Small differences between pieces of the same design, which are normal in handwork and absent in cast copies.
  • Tool marks and uneven solder on the reverse, which show hand finishing.
  • A workshop video showing the worker making your piece, with time stamps.
  • A production rate that makes sense. Hundreds of identical hand-set pieces in a day suggest machines or outsourcing.

Why it matters for your customers

Marketplaces and consumer authorities in the EU, UK and US can treat misleading handmade claims as unfair trading. Your wording depends on your market, so check local rules. A safer description names the actual process, such as hand-set stones or hand-finished.

Also expect variation. Handmade batches differ in colour, size and finish, so set a tolerance in your purchase order and approve a sample range, not a single perfect piece.

Choosing a supplier

Choose a workshop that can show the craft at work, and be wary of a supplier whose catalogue contains every style under the sun. Craft-led makers usually specialise.

Verify identity and capacity with the checks in trader or manufacturer. Handwork limits capacity, so ask how many pieces a week the workshop can produce and plan the order around it.

How should you write handmade into your order?

Define the claim in the purchase order. For example, state that stones are hand-set, that finishing is by hand, or that the piece is hand-beaded. Describe the allowed variation and the inspection method.

Ask the supplier to confirm the same claim in writing on the invoice or pack document. If a customer or marketplace questions your wording, you then have a record. Inspecting the first few pieces at the workshop, with photos of the work in progress, gives you evidence that the claim matches what was made. It also makes any later dispute easier to settle.

If a supplier cannot describe how a piece is made, step by step, treat that as an answer in itself and move on to the next name on your shortlist.
