How are pumps packed for export?

Small pumps go in individual corrugated cartons with foam or moulded inserts, palletised and stretch-wrapped. Larger pumps and motors go in wooden crates or on skids with rust protection.

Small and mid-sized pumps are usually packed one per carton, with foam, moulded pulp or cardboard inserts to stop movement, then stacked on pallets and stretch-wrapped. Larger pumps, motors and pump sets go in wooden crates or are bolted to skids, with rust protection on machined surfaces.

Packing for export must survive several handlings, weeks of sea freight and humid conditions. Domestic Indian packing is often lighter, so specify export packing in your order.

Cartons for small pumps

  • A strong corrugated carton, often five-ply for heavier pumps, sized closely to the product.
  • Inserts or end caps that hold the pump still and protect the terminal box, fan cover and ports.
  • Plugs or caps on suction and delivery ports to keep out dust and insects.
  • The manual, test certificate and warranty card in a sealed bag inside the carton.
  • Clear printing of model, rating, voltage, frequency, serial number, weight and handling marks.

Submersible pumps

Borewell pump ends and motors are long and slim, so they are packed in long cartons or wooden boxes, sometimes separately and sometimes coupled. The shaft and coupling must be protected from bending. Water-filled motors may be shipped filled or empty depending on the maker's design, and the manual must explain how to fill them before use.

Drop cable is usually coiled and packed separately. Make sure each coil is labelled with size and length.

Crates and skids for large pumps

Heavy pumps and motor sets are fixed to a timber skid or packed in a closed crate. The unit should be bolted down, not just wedged, and lifting points marked. Machined faces, shafts and couplings need rust preventive and a wrap of VCI film or similar protection.

Timber used for crates, pallets and skids must meet ISPM 15, the international rule for wood packaging, which requires heat treatment or approved fumigation and the official mark. Our article on export packing and ISPM 15 for machines covers this in detail, and preventing rust in sea freight covers moisture.

Palletising and loading

Cartons are usually stacked on pallets in a pattern that keeps heavy units at the bottom and respects the carton's stacking strength. Corner boards and strapping help. In the container, pallets should be braced so they cannot shift.

Pallets protect cartons but take space. Loose-loading cartons fits more pumps but means slower unloading and more handling damage. The trade-off is covered in how many pumps fit in a container.

What to agree in writing

  • The carton grade and inserts for each model, approved from a sample pack.
  • Marking and labelling requirements, including your barcodes and language.
  • Crate and skid design for large units, with ISPM 15 compliance.
  • Rust protection for machined parts and desiccant where needed.
