How is salt shipped: bulk vessels, bags or jumbo bags?

Large industrial orders go loose in bulk carriers. Smaller or higher grades ship in 25 or 50 kg bags or one-tonne jumbo bags, usually in containers. Volume and grade decide the method.

Salt ships in three main ways: loose in bulk carriers, in jumbo bags, or in small bags inside containers. Large industrial orders almost always go in bulk, while edible and smaller orders usually go in bags.

The choice depends on your volume, the grade, your receiving port and how you store and use the salt.

Bulk vessels

Industrial salt for chlor-alkali and soda ash plants moves in bulk carriers. A shipping analysis published in August 2025 found that Supramax vessels carried about 75% of India's salt exports, mostly in parcels of 50,000 to 60,000 tonnes, with Panamax vessels carrying much of the rest. Most cargo loaded at Deendayal (Kandla) and Mundra.

Bulk is the lowest cost per tonne, but it needs a buyer with a bulk berth, grab unloading and covered storage. It also needs a full cargo or a share of one. Salt is a listed cargo under the IMSBC Code, the international code for solid bulk cargoes, and the shipper must declare it correctly. Your charterer or forwarder will handle the vessel side. Ask the seller how long the salt has been stacked to drain before loading, because wet salt adds weight and loses quality in the hold.

Jumbo bags

Jumbo bags, also called FIBCs or big bags, usually hold about one tonne each. They suit buyers who take a few hundred tonnes at a time and have forklifts or cranes. They load into containers or into break bulk holds.

Ask for the bag's safe working load and safety factor, a liner if moisture matters, and proper lifting loops. A burst jumbo bag in a container is a messy and costly problem.

Small bags

Edible, water softener and some industrial salt ship in 25 kg or 50 kg woven polypropylene bags, often with an inner liner. Retail packs go in printed pouches inside cartons. These all travel in containers, usually 20-foot units, because salt is heavy and reaches the container's weight limit long before it fills the space.

Check the road weight limits in your country before agreeing a load per container. A box that is legal at sea may be overweight on your local roads. For a fuller comparison of vessel and container options, read freight options for bulk minerals.

Protecting the cargo

  • Salt absorbs moisture, so containers should be clean, dry and lined if the buyer asks for it.
  • Salt corrodes steel, so some lines require a liner or refuse loose salt in containers.
  • Bags should be stacked to avoid crushing and shifting during the voyage.
  • Draft surveys or weighbridge records should confirm the quantity loaded.
