To import dehydrated onion, psyllium husk, herbs or moringa powder from India, use the same route as any food ingredient: specification, supplier audit, tested sample, contract, supervised loading and customs. What changes is the test list and the legal status of each product.
This guide takes each product in turn. For the general route, start with how to import spices from India step by step.
How to import dehydrated onion
Dehydrated onion comes mostly from the Mahuva area. Decide the form (flakes, kibbled, chopped, minced, granules or powder), the colour (white, red or pink) and the moisture limit. Salmonella and total plate count are the usual microbiological concerns, and many buyers ask for steam sterilisation. Pesticide residues matter for the EU. Ask for a lab report on each lot and an independent check before shipment.
Powder cakes if moisture or packing is wrong. Cartons with food-grade liners protect it better than open bags.
Across all these products, the common failure is a specification that says too little. Add the test method next to each limit, name the sampling point, and state the packing and liner. Also decide up front what happens to a lot that is slightly outside a limit: a price adjustment, a re-test or a rejection. Agreeing that before the dispute keeps the relationship intact.
How to import psyllium husk
Psyllium is bought by purity grade, mesh and swell volume, and the specification must set limits for light extraneous matter, ash and microbes. Writing a specification for psyllium husk powder covers it. The Unjha area is the main processing centre.
Whether the lot is sold as food, supplement ingredient or pet food changes the market rules. Confirm the use with your regulator or broker.
Plan your sample round carefully. Ask for a sample of each grade you might buy, labelled with the lot number and date, and test them side by side. You will often find that the middle grade meets your use at a sensible level, and that the top grade carries a premium your application does not need. That decision belongs in your specification, not in a later negotiation.
How to import herbs from India and moringa powder
Herbs and moringa powder are sold by plant part, colour, particle size and moisture. Check identity first, because leaf, stem and powder from other plants can slip into a lot. Heavy metals and pesticide residues are the tests most often needed. Organic moringa from Gujarat explains what is available and what a certificate should show.
In the EU, a botanical may need a novel food check before it can be sold, and in the US, supplement rules apply. These are yours to confirm before you order.
How to import organic spices
Organic lots need a valid organic certificate for the supplier, and in the EU an electronic certificate of inspection in the TRACES system. Check the certificate scope covers the exact product, and that the plant keeps organic and conventional lots apart. The EU organic import rules for Indian spices set out the route.
