How to import peanuts, sesame, mango pulp, castor oil and guar gum

A short import route for each of five Indian lines: peanuts, sesame, mango pulp, castor oil and guar gum, with the main risk and the main test for each.

To import peanuts, sesame, mango pulp, castor oil or guar gum from India, you follow the general route of specification, supplier audit, tested sample, contract, loading and customs. The difference between these five is the main risk. For peanuts it is aflatoxin, for sesame salmonella and pesticides, for mango pulp heat treatment and packing, for castor oil the pack and the end use, and for guar gum viscosity and the grade.

Each section below gives the short route. For the general steps, see how to import spices from India step by step.

How to import peanuts from India

Specify the count (for example 40/50 or 60/70), the variety (Java or Bold), moisture and the aflatoxin limit you will test against. The limit depends on your market, as covered in the aflatoxin limits that apply to peanuts. How aflatoxin is tested and controlled explains sampling, which matters because aflatoxin sits in a few kernels, not evenly through the lot.

Timing differs by line. Peanut, sesame and guar follow the crop calendar, mango pulp follows a short pulping season, and castor oil follows the seed harvest. Ask the supplier when the raw material arrives and how old the stock is, because a lot made from last season's seed or fruit behaves differently from fresh stock. Match your order date to the season, not to your own calendar.

How to import sesame seeds

Choose natural, hulled or black seed, then set purity and oil content. Ask for salmonella and pesticide residue tests on every lot for the EU. Check the current EU position on sesame from India with your broker, because the checks have changed before.

Keep the paperwork consistent across all five lines. The product name on the invoice, the lab certificate, the packing list and the phytosanitary or health certificate should match word for word. Small differences in grade names are a frequent cause of customs queries, and they are cheap to avoid if you agree the wording before the supplier prints the documents.

How to import mango pulp

Mango pulp is sold by variety, Brix level, sweetened or unsweetened, and pack: aseptic bags in drums, or cans. It is a seasonal product, so book before the season and agree who stores it. Check the process records for heat treatment and the packing date. Swelling or spoilage points to a failed seal or process.

How to import castor oil

Decide the grade (for example first special grade or BSS), acid value, colour and the pack: drums, flexitank or ISO tank. How castor oil is shipped in bulk compares the options. Confirm the end use, as pharmaceutical, cosmetic and industrial lots follow different rules.

How to import guar gum

State the grade (food or industrial), the viscosity at a stated concentration and time, the mesh and the moisture. Industrial buyers care about hydration speed, food buyers about microbiology. A lab report with the method written on it is what makes the number comparable.

In every case, the independent lab report and a pre-shipment sample are what protect you. Duty depends on the HS code and the country, and your broker gives the current rate.
