There is no single HS code for castings. The code follows what the part is and what it is made of, so an HS code for castings depends on whether it is a finished article, a part of a machine or a general metal article. Brass fittings, fasteners, bearings and valves each have their own headings.
The headings below are the usual starting points in the international system. Your country adds more digits and applies its own notes, so confirm the final code with your customs broker.
Castings
A casting is classified by its use first. If it is clearly a part of a specific machine, it generally goes with that machine's parts heading. If it is a general casting, it goes to the metal chapters: cast articles of iron or steel in Chapter 73, or articles of other metals in their own chapters.
A raw casting, a machined casting and a casting with fitted parts can sit in different headings. Describe the finish on the invoice. See how to find the HS code for a machine or part.
Brass fittings
Brass is a copper alloy, so brass fittings are classified under Chapter 74. Copper tube or pipe fittings go under heading 7412, and other articles of copper, including many turned brass components, under 7419. Brass taps, cocks and valves belong in heading 8481 rather than Chapter 74. Electrical parts such as terminals go under Chapter 85.
The line between a fitting and a valve is a classification question that depends on the function. Include a drawing and a description with your enquiry. See brass sanitary fittings and standards.
Fasteners
Screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws and washers of iron or steel are in heading 7318. Similar items of copper, including brass, are in heading 7415. Stainless steel fasteners fall under the iron and steel heading.
Fasteners made for a specific machine and not used as general fasteners can be classified differently, but this is rare. Read fastener grades and standards for how the grade is described.
Bearings
Ball and roller bearings are in heading 8482, with subheadings for ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, other roller bearings and parts. Housings and plain bearing parts are in 8483. Bearings bought as part of an assembled machine are generally classified with the machine.
Name the type clearly, such as deep groove ball bearing or tapered roller bearing, with the dimensions.
Valves and auto parts
Taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes and tanks are in heading 8481, split by function, for example pressure-reducing valves, check valves and safety valves, and by material and type. Parts are in a separate subheading.
Parts and accessories for motor vehicles are in heading 8708. Many auto parts, such as engine components, have their own headings and are classified there instead. A part that fits both a vehicle and other uses follows the general notes for the section.
Check before you order
Ask the broker to confirm the code for each part family, not for the whole order. Put the same code and description on the invoice and the packing list. Rates vary by country and trade agreement, so check the official tariff or use a binding ruling.
