To import bentonite to the USA or to import bentonite to UAE and the wider Gulf, you start with the end use. Foundry, drilling, civil engineering and cat litter each need a different grade, and the grade decides the specification, the packing and the freight.
Bentonite buyers in the GCC and the United States are different markets with different habits, but the supplier checks are the same. How to import bentonite comes down to grade, packing, paperwork and a plan for testing.
Which bentonite grade do you need?
Indian bentonite is mined mainly in Kutch and sold as sodium-activated, calcium and natural grades. Bentonite grades explains how they differ. Drilling mud buyers typically want high swelling and viscosity. Foundry buyers want bonding strength and a stable moisture level. Pet-litter buyers want clumping and low dust.
State the end use to the supplier and ask for test results on the properties that matter for it, such as swell index, moisture, particle size and viscosity. Where the use is regulated, for example drilling, ask whether the buyer's specification refers to an industry standard.
How do bulk and bagged bentonite compare?
Bentonite ships as powder or granules in bags, jumbo bags or bulk. Bulk or bags for bentonite sets out the trade-offs. Bags and jumbo bags in containers suit smaller and mixed orders. Bulk suits regular large users who can unload and store dry material.
Moisture is the enemy in transit. Ask for lined bags or container liners, and for desiccant where the route is long or humid.
What differs between the US and the GCC?
In the United States, bentonite is generally a mineral product, but classification, labelling and any worker-safety documents depend on the end use. Respirable crystalline silica can be present in some bentonite, and a safety data sheet should say so. Confirm what your customs broker and your own safety adviser require.
In the Gulf states, import rules, conformity schemes and port procedures differ by country and by product use. Ask your clearing agent which certificates the destination wants, whether a conformity assessment applies, and which tariff classification they will use.
We give no duty figures, because tariffs and trade measures change and must be checked at source before you commit.
How do you check quality before it ships?
A certificate of analysis from the factory is a start, not proof. Use a short routine:
- Agree the specification with test methods before the first order, including swell index and moisture.
- Approve a pre-shipment sample from the actual lot, not a hand-picked retained sample.
- Have an independent laboratory test that sample against the contract.
- Supervise loading, and keep sealed samples for any dispute.
Where do Indian suppliers fit?
Kutch has mines, processing plants and nearby ports. Export markets for Gujarat salt and bentonite gives context. Check who actually mines and processes the material before you rely on a supplier's claim.
How do you set a sensible trial order?
For a new grade, start with a trial order that is large enough to test in your process but small enough to limit loss if the product underperforms. Give the supplier your acceptance criteria in advance, in numbers, and agree what happens if the lot fails.
Repeat orders should then hold the same specification. Keep a retained sample of the approved lot, so that a later shipment can be compared with it. Bentonite varies from seam to seam, and a retained sample is your reference when supply changes.
