Importing guar gum to the USA and castor oil to China

To import guar gum to the USA or castor oil to China, the end use decides which rules apply. Here is what changes between food and industrial lots, and what to ask your supplier.

If you want to import guar gum to the USA, the first question is whether the powder goes into food or into an industrial process such as drilling fluid. The same applies to castor oil going to China: the end use decides which authority, which documents and which specification apply.

The two products behave differently once they reach a port. Guar gum is a plant powder that is usually not dangerous cargo. Castor oil is a bulk liquid that needs the right packaging and a clean paper trail. Nothing below replaces advice from your customs broker, who is responsible for the entry.

Importing guar gum to the USA: food or industrial?

Food-grade guar gum is a food ingredient in the United States, so it comes under the Food and Drug Administration. The importer must meet the foreign supplier verification rules, and the Indian plant should be registered as a food facility. Both are explained in what the FSVP rule means for US importers and what FDA facility registration means for your supplier.

Industrial guar, sold for oil and gas drilling, is not a food, so the food rules do not apply to it. The buyer will care about viscosity, hydration speed and mesh instead. How guar is used in drilling explains why those numbers matter.

Do not assume a lot can switch sides. A plant that runs industrial lots may not hold food certification, and a food buyer will reject a lot made on a shared line without controls.

Importing castor oil to China: what to check first

Castor oil for China raises the same first question. Pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food uses fall under stricter Chinese rules than a lot sold as a chemical feedstock for lubricants, coatings or polymers.

China's customs authority runs its own registration and labelling regime for foreign food producers, and other categories follow chemical or cosmetic rules. These requirements are revised often. Ask your Chinese importer or agent, in writing, which category your lot falls into before you place the order, and check again when you book.

Castor oil is generally not treated as dangerous goods for sea freight, but that rests on the product and the packing. Read whether castor oil is hazardous cargo, then confirm with the safety data sheet and your forwarder.

Documents and codes both routes share

Both products need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Most lots also need a certificate of analysis from the plant, and many buyers want an independent lab to confirm it. See reading a laboratory certificate for what to check.

Your broker will classify each product under the Harmonized System. Guar gum and castor oil sit in different chapters, and the exact subheading depends on grade and form. Duty rates differ by country and change over time, so ask your broker for the current figure rather than relying on an article. A landed-cost view comes from a sourcing review.

How the cargo travels

Guar gum usually ships in bags on pallets in a lined container. Keep it dry, because moisture changes viscosity and invites mould. Castor oil ships in drums, flexitanks or ISO tanks, as covered in how castor oil is shipped in bulk. Cost depends on the pack, the route and the season, so ask for a written quote on your chosen terms. FOB, CIF or DAP sets who carries which risk.
