China is the larger sanitaryware producer, with a wider range and more high-tech products such as smart toilets. India, mainly through Morbi and Thangadh in Gujarat, is strong in mainstream vitreous china WCs and basins at a competitive cost position.
Neither origin is better across the board. Quality depends on the factory, not the country, and both have excellent and poor plants. The right choice depends on your product mix, your market's standards and your duty position.
Range
Chinese factories offer more variety in one place. You can find smart toilets with electronic bidet functions, unusual shapes, and complete bathroom packages with taps and furniture.
Indian factories focus on the core range: one-piece, two-piece and wall-hung WCs, wash basins, pedestals and urinals. Many also make coloured and matt glazes. If your range is mostly standard ceramic pieces, India covers it well. Our article on why Morbi and Thangadh are known for sanitaryware explains the cluster's strengths.
Quality
Both countries have factories that meet European and North American standards. Both also have plants that ship weak glazes, poor flush performance or warped pieces.
Do not judge by origin. Ask for test reports for the exact model, to the standard your market uses, and have a sample tested. Our guide on how sanitaryware is tested lists what to ask for.
Lead time and logistics
- Gujarat factories sit a few hours from Mundra and Deendayal (Kandla) ports, which have short sea routes to the Gulf and East Africa.
- Chinese ports have more direct sailings to many destinations, which can mean shorter transit to the Far East and parts of the Americas.
- Production lead times are similar for stock models in both countries; custom models take longer anywhere.
Duties and trade rules
Import duties and trade remedies differ by origin and change often. Some markets apply extra duties to goods from one country and not the other. Check your current tariff schedule for HS heading 6910 and any trade-remedy notices for both origins before you compare quotes. A customs broker can confirm the rates that apply to you as of the date you import.
Cost position
India has competitive labour and a deep local supply of clay and feldspar. China has greater scale and more automation in its larger plants. Gas and propane prices affect Indian kilns directly, and the same is true of energy costs in China. Our comparison of Morbi tiles with China, Spain and Vietnam makes similar points for tiles.
Compare landed cost, not ex-works price. Freight, duty, breakage and the cost of handling complaints often decide which origin is cheaper for you.
Next step
Many importers source standard ceramics from India and buy smart or specialist items elsewhere. We can find and audit Indian factories for your core range and compare them against your current supply. To start, book a free sourcing review.
