LCL shipping for textiles and couriering fabric samples

LCL suits small textile orders but adds handling and delay. Fabric samples go by express courier with a proforma invoice. Here is how each works and what to watch.

LCL shipping for textiles means your cartons share a container with other shippers' goods, which suits orders too small for a full container. To courier fabric samples from India, use an express courier with a proforma invoice marked as samples of no commercial value, where your country allows.

The two are very different. LCL is a freight choice for production orders. Courier is a documentation and timing choice for swatches and pre-production samples.

When does LCL make sense for textiles?

LCL works when you are testing a new supplier or a new product and the order is well below a container. You pay for the space your goods use and avoid committing to a larger volume.

The costs are extra handling and time. Your cartons are consolidated at an origin freight station, deconsolidated at the destination and cleared separately, so there are more places for delay or damage. Textiles are vulnerable to moisture and crushing, so strong cartons and polythene linings matter even more.

How do you reduce LCL risk?

Use sturdy export cartons rated for stacking, wrap fabric in polythene, and mark every carton clearly. Ask your forwarder about the consolidator's reputation and free storage days at destination.

Consider whether the factory can hold your goods until you have enough for a full container, or whether a small first order by air is better. Air freight for textiles explains when that makes sense.

How do you courier fabric samples from India?

Swatches and small cuttings go by express courier. The mill or supplier prepares an invoice or proforma, states the fibre content, notes that the goods are samples, and gives the tariff code. Your courier then handles customs at the destination.

Know what is allowed in your country. Some markets treat small shipments as dutiable. In the US, the duty-free de minimis exemption has been suspended for all countries since August 2025, so even samples may need formal clearance. Confirm with your courier before the parcel leaves.

What should be in a sample parcel?

Ask the mill to include these so that the sample is useful as well as legal.

  • A header card or label with quality, composition, GSM, width and a reference number.
  • A swatch large enough to test, as covered in how to get fabric swatches and samples from Indian mills.
  • A clear invoice with correct description, value declared and country of origin.
  • A tracking number sent to you the day it ships.

What about air freight for small orders?

If a small order is urgent, air freight may be quicker than LCL once the delays at the consolidation station are counted. The cost per kilogram is much higher, so it suits light, high-value garments more than heavy fabric.

Chargeable weight is the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, and garments in cartons are often charged by volume. Ask your forwarder to quote on both so you can see which applies.
