The United States is usually described as the largest market for Indian psyllium, mainly for fibre supplements and over-the-counter products. Europe and the UK are also important, followed by a wide spread of buyers across Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Oceania.
Psyllium is shipped to a very wide range of countries, but a few large buyers take a big share of the volume. Exact shares change from year to year. For current figures, check India's official export statistics published by the Ministry of Commerce, or your own country's import data.
What each market tends to buy
- United States: large volumes of high-purity husk and husk powder for fibre supplements, laxatives and food. Buyers often need pharmacopoeia compliance and tight microbial limits.
- European Union: husk and powder for food, bakery, supplements and herbal medicines, with close attention to pesticide residues and ETO.
- United Kingdom: similar needs to the EU, under its own food and medicines rules.
- Other markets: a mix of food, supplement, pharma and feed uses, often with a wider range of grades.
Why the market matters to you
The market you sell into shapes your spec. A US supplement maker, a European bakery and a feed blender need different grades, tests and documents. The grade choices are explained in which psyllium purity grade is used for pharma, food and feed.
Mills also specialise. Some focus on large pharma buyers and hold the audits and documents those buyers need. Others mainly serve food or feed. Ask a mill which markets it already ships to, and for which uses.
Large buyers move the market
Because demand is concentrated in a few large supplement and pharma buyers, their booking decisions can move prices at Unjha. A big booking after a weak harvest can push prices up quickly for everyone else. This is one reason prices swing, as covered in why psyllium prices swing so much between years.
Smaller buyers can still get good service. They often do best with mid-sized mills that value steady repeat orders. These mills may be more flexible on pack, grade and mixed containers, and more willing to hold a seasonal price for a regular customer. Ask about their current customer mix, so you know whether your order will matter to them.
Market-specific checks
- US: FDA food facility registration for the plant, and whether your product needs USP compliance.
- EU: pesticide residues against EU MRLs, ETO testing and, for organic, a certificate of inspection through TRACES.
- UK: residue and organic rules that may differ from the EU since Brexit.
- All markets: the importing country's own food law decides what is acceptable, not Indian standards.
