What are the main uses of castor oil in industry?

Castor oil is used in lubricants and greases, coatings, polyurethanes, nylon 11 and other polymers, cosmetics, textile chemicals and pharmaceuticals, largely because of its ricinoleic acid.

Castor oil is mainly an industrial raw material. It goes into lubricants and greases, paints and coatings, polyurethanes, bio-based polymers such as nylon 11, cosmetics, textile chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

The reason is its chemistry. Most of the oil is ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid with a hydroxyl group. Few other natural oils offer that, so castor oil has few direct substitutes.

Why castor oil is different

The hydroxyl group makes castor oil thick, polar and soluble in alcohol. It also gives chemists a site to react, which lets them build polyols, esters, acids and polymers from it. Castor oil is not used as a cooking oil.

India is the main world supplier, with most production in Gujarat. The reasons are covered in why India is the world's main supplier of castor oil.

Main industrial uses

  • Lubricants and greases: castor oil and its derivatives are used in specialist lubricants. Hydrogenated castor oil and 12-hydroxystearic acid are key raw materials for lithium and calcium greases.
  • Polyurethanes: castor oil acts as a natural polyol in coatings, adhesives, sealants, foams and elastomers.
  • Paints, coatings and inks: dehydrated castor oil is used as a drying oil, and castor derivatives act as rheology modifiers.
  • Polymers: castor oil is the raw material for undecylenic acid, used to make nylon 11, and for sebacic acid, used in some nylons, plasticisers and lubricants.
  • Cosmetics and personal care: lipsticks, hair oils, soaps and creams use castor oil and derivatives such as hydrogenated and ethoxylated castor oil.
  • Pharmaceuticals: castor oil has a long history as a laxative and is used in some formulations and as an excipient, in pharmacopoeia grades.
  • Textile and leather chemicals: sulphated castor oil, known as Turkey red oil, is used as a wetting agent and in dyeing.
  • Surfactants and other chemicals: ethoxylated castor oil is used as an emulsifier in many sectors.

Which grade for which use

Most derivative makers buy first special grade, because later processing deals with colour. Some buyers need paler BSS grade. Cosmetic and pharma users need oil made and tested to their own specifications. See what first special grade castor oil is.

Many derivatives are also made in Gujarat, so you can buy them from Indian plants rather than converting oil yourself. These include hydrogenated castor oil, 12-hydroxystearic acid, dehydrated castor oil and blown castor oil.

What buyers should think about

  • Supply depends on one crop in one region, so weather in Gujarat moves the market.
  • Grade and test methods must match your process. Write them into the contract.
  • Sustainability and traceability questions are rising, especially for cosmetic and branded uses.
  • Bulk shipping needs the right tank, flexitank or drum, and clean previous cargo history.

How we help

We identify Gujarat crushers and derivative plants that make the grade you need, audit them on site and have samples tested at NABL-accredited labs. We also follow production and supervise loading. Ask for a free sourcing review.
