Mehsana fries, Valsad mango pulp and Kutch dates

Mehsana frozen French fries manufacturers, Valsad mango pulp manufacturers and Kutch dates suppliers: three Gujarat food hubs and what to check in each.

Gujarat's processed-food supply is not only spices. Mehsana frozen French fries manufacturers, Valsad mango pulp manufacturers and Kutch dates suppliers each draw on a local crop, so each sits in a different part of the state and has different checks.

This post sets out what each hub is known for and what an importer should look at before ordering.

Mehsana and north Gujarat: frozen fries

North Gujarat grows potatoes in the winter season, and frozen potato plants have been built nearby. Whether Gujarat has become a hub for frozen potato products explains the growth of this industry.

Frozen fries depend on the potato variety and its dry matter and sugar content, which decide the fry colour and texture. Ask which varieties the plant uses and how long they are stored. Specify the cut, length distribution and fry colour, and ask about the frying and freezing line.

Ask the plant for its cold-store temperature records. A plant with good records can show you when each pallet was frozen and loaded.

The cold chain is the big risk. Fries must stay frozen from factory to your store, so plan refrigerated containers with temperature recording. Hours of thaw in transit cannot be undone.

Valsad: mango pulp

South Gujarat, including the Valsad area, is a mango-growing region, and pulp plants process the fruit into aseptic or canned pulp during the short mango season. Valsad mango pulp manufacturers supply pulp from local varieties; ask which variety each lot is made from.

Specify Brix, acidity, colour, sweetened or unsweetened, and the pack. Because the season is short, the plant packs a year's supply in a few months, so ask about storage and the date of manufacture. Check for added sugar, acid or preservative, and confirm labelling rules for your market with your adviser.

Kutch: dates

Kutch, in the west of Gujarat, grows dates. Dates grown in Kutch and whether they are exported covers what is grown and sold. Kutch dates suppliers range from farmers' cooperatives to packers, so ask who grows, who grades and who packs.

Dates also show sugar crystals and a sticky surface when stored warm, which are not defects but can worry customers. Agree what is acceptable in writing, and approve a sample in your own conditions.

Date specifications cover variety, size, moisture, defects and insect damage. Insect infestation is a particular risk for dried fruit, so ask about storage, fumigation or other treatments, and check what your market permits.

Checks that apply in all three

Import rules for processed food differ by country. Confirm what applies to you with your regulator or customs broker. We do not publish prices, which depend on the product, pack and volume.

  • Confirm that the company runs the plant itself, and ask for the address and a visit.
  • Request food safety certificates and verify them with the issuing body.
  • Test a sample from the actual lot for microbiology and for the contaminants your market regulates.
  • Agree the packing, labelling language and shelf life in writing before production.
