What is an NABL-accredited laboratory?

An NABL-accredited lab has been assessed by India's National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025 for specific, listed tests.

An NABL-accredited laboratory is a testing lab that India's National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories has assessed against ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for testing competence. NABL works under the Quality Council of India.

Accreditation does not cover a whole lab. It covers a defined scope: named tests, on named product types, by named methods. That detail matters more than the logo on the report.

What accreditation actually checks

ISO/IEC 17025 looks at whether a lab can produce reliable results, and keep producing them. Assessors review the lab's people, equipment, methods and records. Accredited labs are reassessed on a regular cycle and must take part in proficiency testing, where they analyse a sample of unknown content and their result is compared with other labs.

  • Validated methods: the lab has shown that each method works on the product type it is used for.
  • Calibrated equipment: balances, instruments and reference standards are traceable and checked.
  • Trained staff: analysts are qualified and authorised for each test they sign.
  • Quality control: blanks, spikes and reference materials are run alongside your sample.
  • Records: every result can be traced back to the raw data and the analyst.

Scope is the part to read

A lab may be accredited for aflatoxin in chilli by one method, but not for ethylene oxide in sesame. It may hold accreditation for moisture in spices, but run its pesticide work outside scope. Results from tests outside the scope can still be correct, but they do not carry the same assurance.

Each accredited lab has a scope document listing its accredited tests. NABL publishes a searchable directory of accredited labs on its website. Before you rely on a report, check that the specific test, product group and method appear in that lab's current scope, and that the accreditation has not lapsed.

Why buyers use NABL labs in India

Testing in India before shipment lets you catch a problem while the goods are still in the factory. A failed result at origin costs a retest or a different lot. A failed result at your port costs a detention, a rejection or a recall.

India has a large number of NABL-accredited food labs, including labs owned by international testing groups and independent Indian labs. Many sit close to spice and seed hubs in Gujarat, so samples can reach them quickly. For how to read what comes back, see reading a lab certificate.

What accreditation does not tell you

  • It does not prove the sample came from your lot. That depends on who drew and sealed it.
  • It does not make the lab's limits your limits. The pass or fail line comes from your spec and your market.
  • It does not cover every test on the report, only those within scope.
  • It does not mean your importing authority will accept the report in place of its own checks.

How we help

We send buyer samples to NABL-accredited labs and check the lab's scope for each test before we book it. You receive the original report from the lab, not a copy retyped by a supplier. To set up testing for your next lot, ask for a free sourcing review.
