Non woven for medical use and non woven for shopping bags are often both polypropylene, but they are bought on different specifications. Medical and hygiene rolls are light, uniform and often layered for barrier performance. Shopping bag fabric is heavier, stronger and judged on load and print.
Do not treat them as the same product with a different GSM. The structure, finish and tests differ.
What does medical-use non-woven need?
Medical and hygiene non-wovens are typically lightweight spunbond, or layered constructions such as spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS), where the middle layer provides filtration or fluid barrier. The structures are explained in spunbond, meltblown and needle-punched non-wovens.
Properties that matter include weight uniformity, fluid resistance or hydrophilic treatment for hygiene uses, low linting and consistent web formation. Finished products such as gowns, drapes and masks are regulated as medical devices in many markets, with their own standards. The device manufacturer carries that responsibility, so the roll supplier should give you test data and traceability, not a medical claim. We stay at fabric level and do not cover device approval.
What does shopping bag non-woven need?
Carry bags are usually spunbond polypropylene in heavier weights than hygiene rolls, converted into flat or gusseted bags with handles. The things that decide quality are listed below.
Many bag buyers also ask about reuse. A light bag used once behaves differently from a heavier bag sold as reusable, which is expected to carry weight many times. State the load you expect and the number of uses, and have the supplier test a finished bag to that load. This avoids paying for strength you do not need, or discovering that a handle fails in a shop.
- Weight and tolerance, because buyers often find the delivered GSM below the quoted figure.
- Tensile and seam strength, tested by loading a finished bag with a realistic weight.
- Colour consistency and print quality, since bags are a branded product.
- UV stabiliser if bags will be carried or stored outdoors, which is covered in our guide to UV stabilisation.
How do weight ranges compare?
As a general pattern, hygiene and medical layers are at the light end of the non-woven range and bag fabric sits higher. Exact figures vary by product and mill, so see non-woven GSM ranges available and ask for the exact weight, tolerance and test method in each quote.
How should you test each?
For medical-use rolls, ask for weight, tensile strength, and the barrier or hydrostatic data your product design needs, from an accredited laboratory. For bag fabric, ask for weight, tensile and tear, and check a finished bag under load.
Rules on plastic bags and single-use plastics differ by country and sometimes by state. Check what thickness or material rules apply in your destination before you order bags.
For both, approve a pre-shipment sample from the actual production lot and compare it with the sealed standard before the container is loaded.
