Yes, certified organic psyllium seed, husk and husk powder are produced in Gujarat and Rajasthan and exported. It costs more than conventional psyllium.

There is no fixed premium. The gap changes each year with organic crop size, certification costs, demand and the conventional price. Ask for conventional and organic quotes for the same grade, at the same time, to see the real difference.

Why organic costs more

The premium is not only the farm price. Each step from field to container carries extra cost and extra risk for the processor.

  • Smaller supply: fewer farmers grow certified organic psyllium, and yields can be lower.
  • Certification: farm groups and processors pay for inspection, testing and paperwork.
  • Segregation: organic seed must be stored, milled and packed apart from conventional, often in dedicated runs.
  • Testing: organic lots still need residue testing, and failures mean downgrading.
  • Certificates for export: certificates of inspection and transaction documents add time and cost.

Which certificate you need

The certificate depends on where you sell. India's organic standard is NPOP. The USDA ended its recognition of NPOP in 2021, so organic psyllium for the US needs USDA NOP certification directly. The EU has recognised NPOP for some categories, but the scope has narrowed. EU organic imports need a certificate of inspection through TRACES.

These rules change. Check the current position with your own control body before you buy. Background is in what NPOP certification is and whether it is accepted in the EU and US.

Risks to watch

Organic psyllium is a target for fraud because of the premium. Conventional product can be relabelled, or certificates can cover less than they claim.

  • Check that the processor, not just the farm group, holds a valid certificate.
  • Check the certificate scope lists psyllium husk or powder, not just seed.
  • Ask for transaction certificates or equivalent for the lot.
  • Test each lot for pesticide residues at an accredited lab.
  • Watch for an organic quote that is barely above conventional. It may not be what it says.

Planning your order

Organic supply is tighter than conventional, so book early in the season, after the harvest from roughly February to April. Consider a contract that covers the year. The general process is explained in how to source certified organic products from India.

Ask the processor how much certified organic seed it bought this season and how much is already committed. The answer tells you whether your volume is realistic. If supply is short, a smaller first lot at the right quality is better than a full container of doubtful product.
