Power press manufacturers in India: how to choose

Choose a power press manufacturer in India by matching tonnage, frame type and clutch to your work, then checking guarding, build quality and safety documents.

To choose a power press manufacturer in India, decide the tonnage, frame type and stroke you need, then check how the press is built, guarded and tested. A press is a safety machine first and a production machine second.

Many makers offer a wide range. Ask which sizes they build every month and which they build only to order.

How much tonnage do you actually need?

Tonnage is the force the press can apply, but it is not the only number that matters. On a mechanical press the rated force is only available near the bottom of the stroke, and the flywheel must also supply enough energy for the job. A press that is big enough in tonnage can still stall on a deep draw.

Work out the force from your part, its material and thickness. Then ask the maker to confirm the rating at the point in the stroke where you need it. Our guide to power presses and tonnage covers the basics.

Which type of press suits your work?

Mechanical presses are fast and suit repetitive blanking and shallow forming. Hydraulic presses give full force through the stroke and suit deep drawing and pressing operations. Our comparison of mechanical and hydraulic presses explains the choice.

For mechanical presses, ask about the frame (C-frame or straight-side), the clutch type and the brake. A part-revolution clutch lets the press stop mid-stroke, which is a safety feature that a full-revolution clutch does not offer.

What should you check in the build?

Frame rigidity, ram guidance and bed flatness decide how long your dies last. Ask for the frame material, whether the frame is fabricated or cast and how it is stress-relieved. Poor ram parallelism wears dies unevenly.

Ask about the crankshaft, bearings and lubrication system. Request the bed and ram parallelism test records. Spare parts availability matters, so ask which components are standard bought-in items and which are made by the maker.

Ask also about the die area: bed size, bolster plate thickness, shut height range and stroke adjustment. These decide which of your dies fit. Measure your largest die and add working room on each side. A press that is right on paper can still be wrong for the die you need to mount. Finally, ask for an acceptance run on a customer-supplied or standard die before dispatch, so you see the press stroking under load and not just idling.

What safety features do export presses need?

Press safety rules vary by destination, and they are strict. Common elements include guards, light curtains, two-hand controls, emergency stops and safe control circuits. International standards exist for press safety, such as the ISO 16092 series, but the rule that binds you is the one in your own country.

Do not assume a press built for the Indian market meets your market's rules. Ask what safety package the maker has supplied for export and request the documents. Our article on press safety guards for export explains what to ask for. Confirm requirements with your national authority or a conformity adviser.
