Private label cleaning chemicals and detergents from India

Private label detergents, cleaners and disinfectants from India raise different rules: detergent labelling for cleaners, and biocide or pesticide approval for anything that disinfects.

For private label cleaning chemicals from India, the manufacturing is the easy part; the rules are not. Plain detergents and cleaners face labelling and surfactant rules, while a disinfectant that claims to kill germs is usually regulated as a biocide or pesticide, and needs approval in many markets before you can sell it.

Decide early which category you are in. It shapes the formula, the claims on the label and the paperwork.

What can you source for detergents and cleaners?

Indian makers supply surfactants, builders, thickeners and finished liquids and powders. If you are a detergent maker, surfactants made in India shows which actives are available, and the same cluster supplies many of the base materials.

For private label detergents from India, the usual options are a finished product from the factory's range under your label, or a formula you supply or co-develop. Surfactants for detergent makers are sold as raw materials, so you can also buy them separately and blend yourself.

What formulation and labelling issues apply?

  • Who owns the formula: if you want exclusivity, put it in the contract and in an NDA, as described in private-label packing for specialty chemicals.
  • Surfactant biodegradability: the EU Detergents Regulation sets requirements for surfactants in detergents, so confirm the actives you choose meet the rules in your market.
  • Ingredient labelling: some markets require listing ingredients by content range, and naming certain fragrance allergens.
  • Hazard labelling: alkaline, acidic or solvent-based cleaners often need hazard pictograms and warnings under GHS or CLP.
  • Child-resistant closures and tactile warnings where a market requires them for hazardous household products.

Why is disinfectant different?

A product that claims to disinfect is making a biocidal claim. In the EU and UK the active substance must be approved and the product usually needs its own authorisation. In the United States the EPA treats many disinfectants as pesticides that must be registered before sale.

That means a private label disinfectant from India is not simply a relabelled drum. You need to know which active it contains, whether that active is approved in your market and who holds the product authorisation or registration. Often you will have to obtain your own, or buy under an arrangement that lets you use another holder's data. Confirm the route with the regulator or a compliance consultant before ordering.

Packaging and shelf life

Cleaners attack the wrong plastic or cap, and bleach-based products lose strength over time. Ask which bottle, cap liner and seal the plant uses, and test shelf life under heat. Our note on specialty chemical packaging lists the main options.

Chemicals that classify as dangerous goods need approved packaging and labels for transport as well as for the shelf.

Fragrance and colour are part of the product identity, so approve them on a physical sample, not a description. Ask for storage stability at raised temperature and in daylight, since fading, separation and bottle swelling are common complaints. Agree the tolerance for fill volume and bottle weight before production, and check the finished goods against it at loading, along with label placement and batch codes.
