Psyllium husk, husk powder and seed are usually packed in 25 kg bags with an inner polythene liner. The liner matters because psyllium absorbs moisture and odours, and damp husk loses swell volume and can grow mould.

The right pack depends on the product, the grade and who will use it. A feed buyer and a pharma buyer will want very different packing, so write your choice into the specification.

Common pack types

  • PP woven bags with an inner PE liner: the most common export pack for husk and seed.
  • Multiwall paper bags with a PE liner: often used for husk powder and by food and pharma buyers.
  • Fibre drums with a food-grade liner: used by some pharma and supplement buyers for powder.
  • Cartons with a liner: used for smaller unit weights or where stacking strength matters.
  • Jumbo bags: occasionally used for seed or feed-grade material, where the buyer can handle them.

Why psyllium needs extra care

Psyllium husk is light, fluffy and hygroscopic. It takes up water from humid air, and sea freight from Gujarat often passes through hot, humid routes. Without a sealed liner, moisture can rise in transit and the product can cake or develop off odours.

Fine powder also escapes through woven bags. A liner keeps the product in, keeps dust out and makes the bag easier to clean on the outside before it enters your plant.

What to specify

  • Pack type, net weight and the tolerance on weight per bag.
  • Liner thickness and whether it is heat sealed or tied.
  • Food-grade declaration for any material in contact with the product.
  • Bag marking: product, grade, lot number, production date, best before or retest date, net weight and origin.
  • Whether bags go on pallets, and if so, heat-treated wooden pallets marked under ISPM 15 or plastic pallets.
  • Stretch wrapping, slip sheets or container liners if your warehouse needs them.
  • Any fumigation requirement or prohibition, and the chemical allowed if any.

Container and loading checks

Packing is only as good as the container it goes into. A wet floor or a rusty roof can ruin a load of good bags. Ask for container inspection before loading, and ask for kraft paper or desiccants on the walls if the route is humid. Photos of the empty container, the loading and the sealed doors should be part of your document pack.

Load quantity depends on the pack and product. Husk is bulky, so the container fills by volume long before weight. See how many tonnes of psyllium husk fit in a container.

Private label and smaller packs

Some mills can print your brand on export bags or pack smaller units. Retail packs, sachets and capsules need a separate check of the plant, as explained in whether Indian suppliers can pack psyllium in retail capsules or sachets.

Where we come in

We write the packing details into your psyllium spec and check the bags, liners and marking at the plant. Our inspector supervises loading, checks the container and sends photos before the doors are sealed. Ask for a free sourcing review.
