How do I write a specification for a rotavator?

List width, tractor power range, hitch category, PTO details, gearbox and drive, blade type and steel, frame and paint, guards, labels, manuals, tests and packing.

A good rotavator specification states every detail that affects performance, safety and fit with your tractors. If you leave something out, the maker fills the gap with its own domestic standard.

Write it as a short document with one model per page, then attach drawings, photos and the approved sample reference. Use the headings below as a checklist.

Size, power and hitch

Drive and rotor

  • State the gearbox type, single-speed or multi-speed, its rated input power and the gear ratios.
  • State whether the side drive is gear or chain, and the oil type and quantity for each.
  • State the bearing types and sizes, and the oil seal type.
  • State the rotor speed range, the number of flanges and the number of blades.
  • State the blade type, such as L, C or J, the steel grade and the hardness range. See which blade materials rotavators use.
  • State the PTO drive shaft type and length, its guard and the overload protection, such as a shear bolt or slip clutch.

Frame, finish and safety

  • State the frame steel thickness at key points and the welding standard or method expected.
  • State the paint system, including surface preparation, primer, top coat colour and dry film thickness.
  • State the guards required, the depth control method and the rear shield or levelling board.
  • State the warning labels, nameplate content and manual languages your market requires.

Tests, inspection and packing

List the checks you expect before loading. These usually include a no-load run of the gearbox, a check for oil leaks, blade hardness tests on a sample, weld and paint checks, and a count of parts against the packing list.

State the packing format, assembled or semi-knocked down, the crate or pallet type and rust protection for machined faces. Name the documents you need, such as the material test certificate for blades and a declaration of conformity where your market requires one.

Finally, state the approval process. Say that the first production unit must match the approved sample, that any change in gearbox, bearing, steel or paint supplier needs your written approval, and that the specification forms part of the purchase agreement.
