How do I sell Indian tiles against Chinese competition?

Compete on range, large formats, flexible containers, consistent shade, reliable reorders and service, and know how trade remedies affect each source in your market.

To sell Indian tiles against Chinese competition, compete on what Morbi does well: a wide range of digital designs and large formats, flexible mixed containers, short transit to some markets and the ability to reorder quickly. Back it with consistent shade, reliable stock and service that a distant competitor cannot match.

Trying to win only on price is a weak position for any importer. A competitor can always undercut you on one container. A reputation for the right tile, in stock, in one shade, is harder to copy.

Know the duty position in your market

Trade remedies change the playing field, and they differ by country and by exporter. The EU and the US have long-standing trade remedy measures on Chinese ceramic tiles. The GCC states apply anti-dumping duties to tiles from both India and China. Indian tiles face their own measures in some markets, listed in countries with anti-dumping duties on Indian tiles.

Because rates are exporter-specific, compare the rate for your factory with the rates your competitors' suppliers pay. Ask a customs broker for the current figures before you build your pricing. A difference in duty can matter more than a difference in factory price.

Where Morbi is strong

  • Range: Morbi factories launch new digital designs often, across marble, stone, wood and concrete looks.
  • Large formats and slabs: many plants make large porcelain sizes and slabs as well as standard tiles.
  • Flexible loads: many factories accept several designs and sizes in one 20 ft container.
  • Transit: Gujarat ports are close to the Gulf, East Africa and parts of Europe compared with East Asian ports, though 2026 routing disruptions affect some lanes.
  • Reorders: shorter transit and quick production make it easier to restock a fast seller.

Where you have to work harder

Quality varies widely between Morbi plants, and buyers who have had a mixed-shade container will not forgive it. Your edge depends on choosing the right factory and controlling grade, shade and packing on every order. How Morbi tiles compare with China, Spain and Vietnam sets out the strengths and gaps by source.

Some customers also assume Chinese tiles are more consistent. Answer that with test reports to ISO 10545, a clear grade definition and arrival photos, not with claims.

How to position your range

Positioning is about choosing where you compete, not matching every product your competitors sell. These approaches work for many importers:

  • Build a focused range of designs you keep in stock, rather than a long list you cannot supply.
  • Offer reserve stock from the same batch for project customers, so they can buy extra tiles later.
  • Sell under your own brand with private-label boxes, so customers ask for your name, not the origin.
  • Give installers and retailers clear technical sheets: size, thickness, water absorption, slip rating and installation advice.
  • Use custom designs or colours that only you sell in your market.
