Shipping spices from India to the USA: routes and transit times

Spices from India reach the USA by sea to east or west coast ports, and the route you choose affects transit, transfers and reliability. Ask your forwarder for the current schedule, as times change.

Shipping spices from India to the USA by sea is a multi-week journey, and the transit time depends on the route, the port pair and whether the container is transhipped. Gujarat exporters usually load at Mundra, and the main decision is whether to deliver to the US east coast or the west coast.

We do not quote fixed transit days here, because schedules move with carrier networks, port congestion and disruptions. Your forwarder can give the sailing and transit for the week you plan to ship.

East coast or west coast?

From western India, services to the US east coast usually come via the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean or via a transhipment hub, or around the Cape of Good Hope if the Red Sea is avoided. Services to the west coast cross the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, normally via a hub in Southeast Asia or East Asia.

Neither side is always faster. Choose by where your customer or warehouse is, since inland trucking or rail from the wrong coast can erase any sea-time saving. New York and nearby ports are the natural gateway for the east coast. For a buyer in the Midwest, ask your forwarder to compare both.

Mundra to New York: how long is the sailing?

Mundra to New York is among the common lanes asked about, and the answer is a number of weeks, not days. Direct services are fewer than transhipped ones. A transhipped route adds a transfer where delays can build.

Treat the carrier's quoted transit as the planned sailing time, then add time for the Indian port gate-in, customs clearance in both countries, and the wait for your container to be discharged and released. Our article on how long sea freight takes from Mundra describes how to build the whole timeline.

What affects cost and reliability

We cannot quote freight, and a real quote comes from your forwarder for your dates. What drives it is useful to know:

  • The route and the number of transhipments.
  • The season. Peak periods ahead of holidays tighten space and raise rates.
  • Disruption on key corridors, such as Red Sea diversions, which lengthen voyages.
  • Container type, weight and the trade term you buy on.
  • The destination port's congestion, which affects how long you wait for the container.

Booking and cut-offs

Each sailing has a cut-off for container gate-in at the port and a separate cut-off for documents. Missing either rolls the container to the next sailing, which can be a week or more later.

Work backwards from the vessel's cut-off: allow for production, inspection and sampling, transport from the factory to Mundra, customs clearance in India and a safety margin. A supplier who plans to finish production on the cut-off day has no margin at all. Supervised loading helps because someone on your side sees the container sealed and the paperwork lodged.

Planning around US import checks

Food shipments into the USA come under the Food and Drug Administration's rules. The importer must file prior notice, and the foreign facility must be registered. Customs may hold the container for examination, so allow time in your plan.

Before booking, read the Gujarat ports used for agri exports and confirm the US requirements with your customs broker.

Next step

A good schedule starts with a realistic production date, and that is where delays start. We supervise production and loading so the container reaches the port on time. To plan your first shipment, book a free sourcing review.
