What sprayers are made in India: knapsack, battery, tractor-mounted?

India makes manual knapsack sprayers, battery and dual-mode sprayers, engine-driven power sprayers and tractor-mounted boom sprayers. Pumps, seals and nozzles decide quality.

Indian makers produce manual knapsack sprayers, battery-operated and dual-mode sprayers, engine-driven power sprayers, and tractor-mounted boom and orchard sprayers. Small sprayers are made in high volume, and tractor sprayers in smaller batches.

The tank and frame look similar across many makers. The pump, seals, hose, lance and nozzles are where quality really differs.

The main types

  • A manual knapsack sprayer uses a hand lever to drive a piston or diaphragm pump. It is simple, cheap to run and easy to repair.
  • A battery sprayer uses a rechargeable battery and a small electric pump. It gives steadier pressure and less operator fatigue.
  • A dual-mode sprayer combines a hand pump and a battery pump, so work can continue when the battery runs flat.
  • An engine-driven power sprayer uses a small petrol engine. It may be carried as a backpack mist blower or mounted on a trolley with a long hose.
  • A tractor-mounted boom sprayer carries a larger tank on the three-point linkage. It is driven by the PTO and sprays through a horizontal boom.
  • An orchard or air-blast sprayer uses a fan to carry spray into tree canopies.

What to specify

For knapsack and battery sprayers, fix the tank capacity, the pump type and the working pressure range. Ask for the battery type, capacity, charger rating and plug type for your country.

Ask which chemicals the seals and hoses resist. Some crop protection products attack cheap rubber quickly, which causes leaks onto the operator's back.

Specify nozzles by type and flow, not just by name. Many markets expect standard nozzle sizes and colour codes. Check the strap, harness and lid design, because leaks and discomfort drive most complaints.

For tractor sprayers, fix the tank size, boom width, pump type and flow, and the hitch category. Confirm the PTO drive shaft has a guard.

Rules to check

Some markets regulate pesticide application equipment. In the EU, new sprayers must meet environmental requirements under the machinery rules, and some countries require periodic inspection of sprayers in use. Read what safety rules apply to agri machinery and confirm details with your regulator.

Checking samples and shipments

Fill each sample with water and pressurise it for a set time. Look for drips at the lid, the pump, the hose joints and the lance trigger. Check that the pressure gauge, if fitted, reads close to a reference gauge.

For battery sprayers, run a full charge and record how long the pump runs at working pressure. Compare that with the maker's claim. Check that the charger carries the marks your market requires.

On bulk orders, ask for a leak test on every unit, not just a sample. Small sprayers are cheap to make but expensive to replace once they reach a dealer.
