When you search for a ceramic tiles exporter in India or a tiles exporter in Gujarat, you will find manufacturers, export houses, wholesalers and trading companies, often under similar names. Buying 'factory direct' only works if you know which one you are talking to.
Each type has a role. The right choice depends on your order size, how much control you need over the product, and how much risk you can carry.
What does each supplier type actually do?
Definitions help, because the words are used loosely:
- A manufacturer presses, fires and sorts the tiles in its own plant and owns the process.
- An exporter or export house handles sales and shipping, and may or may not own a plant.
- A wholesaler buys from several factories and sells from stock, usually in smaller lots, mostly to the domestic market.
- A trading company assembles orders from different factories and takes a margin for finding, mixing and shipping.
How do margin and risk differ?
A manufacturer's price includes only its own margin, but you carry the work of checking and controlling it. A trader adds a margin in exchange for convenience, and may be unable to tell you exactly where the tiles were made or how they were sorted.
The risk with intermediaries is control. If the trader buys the same design from two plants, shade and calibre can differ between boxes in one container. See why quality drops after the first container.
How do you tell which one you are dealing with?
Ask for the plant address, the number of presses and kilns, and a visit or live video of the production line. Check that the company named on the quote, the export documents and the factory registration match. Our guides on telling a trader from a manufacturer and on spotting a tile trader in Morbi give the full checks.
A trader that is open about its role is not a problem. The problem is a trader presenting as a factory.
When is a trading company the right choice?
A trader can be sensible when you need small quantities, many designs from different plants in one container, or fast delivery from stock. It can also suit a first trial order while you learn the market.
For repeat programmes in large volumes, going to the factory usually gives you control over specification, shade and packing. Read finding a genuine tile manufacturer in Morbi before you decide.
What should you ask for to confirm the supplier type?
Request the company registration and the export registration of the entity that will invoice you, then ask whether that entity owns the plant. The names should match across the quote, the proforma invoice and the bill of lading.
Ask who pays for production, who owns the stock, and who is liable if the goods fail inspection. A manufacturer will answer plainly. A trading company may point you to a plant it uses, which is useful information, and you can then decide whether to go to the plant directly or keep the intermediary.
