China is by a wide margin the world's largest tile producer, and India is among the next group of large producers alongside Brazil, Vietnam, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Indonesia. The exact order of the top tile exporting countries shifts from year to year, so treat any single ranking with care.
Production and exports are two different lists. A country can make a great deal and sell most of it at home, or make less and export most of it. India is a good example of the first, and Spain and Italy of the second.
Why is world tile production not the same as exports?
Production counts every square metre made, including tiles sold in the producer's own market. India and China both have very large domestic construction markets, so a major share of their output is used at home.
Exports count only what crosses a border. European producers such as Spain and Italy have smaller home markets and a long record of selling abroad, so their export rank is stronger than their production rank. The industry's standard source for world production and consumption tables is the Ceramic World Review, which publishes annual figures. Check the latest edition rather than relying on a number quoted second-hand.
What is India's market share, and where do you check it?
India's share of world tile exports is much smaller than its share of production. The number depends on whether you measure by area or by value, and on the year. For a figure you can quote, pull export data for the tile HS headings from the destination countries' customs, or from UN Comtrade, and divide by world totals for the same year.
In value terms, Indian tiles sit lower per square metre than most European exports, which is part of why they are popular for value-oriented projects. We explain the cost differences in why Morbi tiles cost less than European tiles.
How does India compare with China, Spain and Vietnam?
The differences that matter to a buyer are not just volume:
- China has the largest industrial base and the widest product range, and has faced trade remedies in several markets.
- India is strong in glazed porcelain, wall tiles and, increasingly, large-format slabs, with a heavy concentration in one cluster.
- Spain and Italy lead in design, technical tiles and premium positioning, and benefit from sitting inside or near the European market.
- Vietnam is a smaller but growing exporter, often used as a diversification option from China.
What does this mean for your sourcing?
A ranking should not decide your supplier. Duties, certifications, lead times and the quality of the individual factory matter more. Our comparison of Morbi tiles against China, Spain and Vietnam goes through those trade-offs, and the guide to main export markets for Morbi tiles shows where Indian tiles already sell.
Which numbers should you not trust?
Be careful with ranking tables copied between websites. Many mix production in square metres with export value in dollars, use different years in the same table, or quote a figure from a company presentation without naming the source.
If a table does not state the year, the unit and the original publisher, do not use it in a business case. Duties also change the real picture: a country that leads on volume may be subject to trade remedies in your market that change its delivered position. Check the current position with your customs broker before comparing origins.
