What viscosity grades are available for guar gum powder?

Guar gum powder is traded in viscosity bands, often from a few thousand to well over five thousand cP at 1%. The method behind the number matters as much as the number.

Guar gum powder is usually sold in viscosity bands measured on a 1% solution. Commonly traded grades run, for illustration, from around 3,000 cP up to 5,000 cP or more, with lower bands for some industrial uses and higher bands for demanding food applications.

These figures are trade conventions, not universal standards. A grade means little unless the method, the timing and the concentration are written next to it.

How grades are usually described

Suppliers often name grades by a viscosity range, such as "3500 to 4000 cP" or "5000 cP minimum", combined with a mesh size such as 200 mesh. Some use their own grade codes. Ask each supplier to translate their codes into a range and a method.

Check whether the band is a minimum or a range. "5000 cP minimum" leaves the top open, which can matter if your process needs a narrow window. A range with both ends gives you more control, and it makes rejection criteria easy to agree.

  • Low viscosity bands: often for textile, paper or uses where easy flow matters.
  • Medium bands: common for general food thickening, sauces and bakery.
  • High bands: used where a small dose must give a lot of body, such as dairy, ice cream or some industrial systems.
  • Fast-hydrating grades: judged on viscosity reached after a few minutes, not after hours.

What drives viscosity

  • Seed quality and crop year: weather stress can lower gum content.
  • Purity of the split: husk and germ dilute the gum.
  • Processing: over-drying, heat damage or harsh grinding break down the chains.
  • Particle size: finer powders hydrate faster, so short-time readings rise.
  • Age and storage: viscosity can fall over time, faster in heat and humidity.

Choosing the right grade

Higher is not always better. A very high viscosity grade can make a sauce gummy, and you pay more for it. Start from your recipe, the dose you use and how quickly the product must thicken on your line. Then test two or three grades in your own process.

Once you choose, fix the range and the method in your specification. Without that, two suppliers can both claim "5000 cP" on very different products. Measurement is explained in how guar gum viscosity is measured, and at what concentration.

Watch for consistency

The first shipment is rarely where problems start. The risk is later lots that drift towards the bottom of the band or below it. Ask for viscosity on each batch, keep retained samples and test a sample yourself on arrival. The general pattern is described in why quality drops after the first container.

How we help

We collect samples of the grades you shortlist, have them tested by an NABL-accredited lab using the method in your spec, and check viscosity again before loading. Begin with a free sourcing review.
