What decides the price of an oil expeller

Oil expeller price depends on capacity, motor, screw material and how the machine is finished. Here is how to compare expeller quotes and avoid paying for the wrong spec.

The price of an oil expeller depends mainly on its capacity, the motor and gearbox behind it, and the material of the screw and cage. Two expellers rated for the same seed can differ widely in cost because one is built to run for years and the other to meet a number on a brochure.

We do not publish prices. This article lists what changes the quote so you can ask for comparable offers.

How does capacity change the cost?

Expeller capacity is stated in kilograms of seed per hour or tonnes per day. A larger machine needs a longer, thicker screw shaft, a stronger worm gearbox and a bigger motor, and each step up costs more than the last.

Capacity also depends on the seed. A machine rated on groundnut may run slower on a high-fibre seed such as cotton seed or on a seed that needs pre-heating. Ask for the rated capacity per seed you intend to crush, not a single headline figure.

Which parts decide how long it lasts?

Wear in an expeller is concentrated in a few parts, and their material is where cost and life are decided:

  • The pressing screw (worm shaft), which should be hardened alloy steel or hard-faced at the wear zones.
  • The cage or barrel bars, which take the pressure and need good steel and accurate gaps.
  • The main gearbox, where gear material, oil capacity and bearing quality matter more than the casing.
  • The motor, whose power rating must match the load without running at its limit.

What else is in the quote?

Check whether the quote includes the motor and starter, a seed cooker or heating chamber, a pre-filter, a filter press for the crude oil, and spare screws or cage bars. A low figure often leaves these out.

Standard of finish matters if you plan to sell edible oil. Food-contact surfaces should be stainless steel or suitable coated metal, and your local food authority may have rules on machinery that touches food. Confirm those with your own regulator.

Delivery and installation also count. Expellers are heavy, and many are shipped as a complete unit on a skid. Ask whether the quote includes a commissioning visit, a set of spare screws and cage bars, and a basic training session for your operators. If the machine will crush more than one seed, ask whether a second screw or choke setting is needed.

How do you get a real quote?

Send the same specification to several makers: seed type, target capacity, power supply (voltage and frequency), whether you need hot or cold pressing, and which accessories you want. Ask for the power rating and the screw material in writing.

Ask for a test run on your seed, or a recorded run, before dispatch. Settle the delivery term at the same time, since FOB, CIF and DAP cover very different costs.
