What decides the price of parking and outdoor tiles?

Thickness, body, size, surface, grade, packing and freight weight drive outdoor tile prices. Here is how each one works, and how to get a quote you can compare.

The price of parking and outdoor tiles is set mainly by thickness, body, size, surface treatment, grade and packing. Because outdoor tiles are heavy, freight per square metre is also a much larger share of the landed cost than it is for wall tiles.

We do not publish prices, because they change with fuel, volume and specification. This article explains what moves them, so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Our general guide to what drives tile prices covers factors shared with indoor tiles.

Thickness and weight

Thickness is the biggest single driver for outdoor ranges. A 20 mm paver uses roughly twice the raw material of a 10 mm tile. It needs a heavier press, longer drying and a slower firing cycle, so each line makes fewer square metres per day.

Weight then drives freight. Containers fill by weight, so a thick paver ships far fewer square metres per container than a thin tile. The freight cost is the same per container, but it is spread over fewer square metres. See how many outdoor pavers fit in a container.

Body and size

  • Porcelain bodies cost more than ceramic bodies, because they need better raw materials and higher firing.
  • Full-body or double-charge construction costs more than a printed glaze on a plain body.
  • Larger formats cost more per square metre, because they need bigger presses and lose more to breakage.
  • Rectified edges add a grinding step, which adds cost and some waste.

Surface and design

Outdoor tiles need grip. A structured mould, a grit layer or a special anti-skid glaze each adds cost. Higher slip ratings usually need more texture or grit.

Design also matters. Designs with many faces, matching indoor versions or special effects cost more to develop and produce. Ready stock designs are usually cheaper than made-to-order ones.

Grade, special pieces and packing

  • Higher grades cost more, because more output is sorted down.
  • Matching steps, copings and skirtings are made in smaller runs and often cost more per piece.
  • Wooden crates or reinforced pallets for heavy pavers cost more than standard cartons and pallets.
  • Wood for export must be treated to ISPM 15, which adds a small handling step.
  • Private-label boxes and custom printing add setup and minimums.

Costs outside the factory

Fuel is one of the largest production costs in Morbi, and gas price changes feed into quotes. That is why many quotes carry a short validity period. Our article on gas prices and Morbi tile costs explains this.

Tests and certification add cost if the factory has to order new reports, such as frost or slip tests for your market. Duties at destination also differ by country and sometimes by exporter.

How to get comparable quotes

  • Send every factory the same written specification: size, thickness, body, surface, slip rating, grade and packing.
  • Ask for square metres, boxes, pallets and gross weight per container for each item.
  • Ask for the quote basis, such as FOB or CIF, and how long the price is valid.
  • Ask which tests are included and which would be extra.
