Yes. A genuine pump maker with its own test bench should accept a witnessed test, where you or an inspector acting for you watch your pumps run and sign the results. Agree it in the purchase order, with the number of pumps, the acceptance grade and the notice period.
If a supplier refuses or keeps delaying, treat that as a warning. It may not have a working bench, or it may be buying pumps from someone else.
Why witnessing matters
Test reports are only as reliable as the people who write them. A witnessed test lets you confirm that the pumps tested are really from your batch, that the instruments are working and calibrated, and that the numbers on the report are the numbers on the screen.
It is most valuable on a first order, after a design change, for a new voltage or frequency, and on high-power pumps where a shortfall is expensive to fix later.
It also changes behaviour. A factory that knows its pumps will be tested in front of a witness tends to check them more carefully before the day. That effect often carries over into later orders.
How to arrange it
- Write the witnessed test into the order, naming the standard and acceptance grade, for example a grade under ISO 9906.
- Agree how many pumps will be tested and that the witness picks them at random from finished stock.
- Ask for a notice period, often a week or more, so you or your inspector can travel.
- Agree what happens if a pump fails: retest, rework, replacement and who bears the delay.
- Ask for the bench calibration certificates to be ready on the day.
What the witness should check
Before the test, the witness checks serial numbers against the packing list and confirms the motor rating, voltage and frequency. During the test, the witness watches each point recorded and notes the readings independently.
After the test, the witness compares the results with the guaranteed duty and the tolerance, then signs only the report that matches what was seen. A good witness also looks at noise, vibration, leaks and motor current, which numbers alone can miss. Our guide to pump performance test reports lists what a report should contain.
If you cannot travel
You can send an independent inspector or a sourcing agent to witness for you. Some buyers also accept a live video test, but video makes it harder to verify instruments and pump selection, so treat it as a fallback.
Witnessing pump tests is one part of a wider factory acceptance process. For larger machines and lines, the broader process is covered in FAT and SAT.
