You find genuine manufacturers by building a long list from several sources, then checking each one against evidence rather than claims. A real manufacturer can show you its machines, its staff, its in-process work and its records on the day you visit.
Online directories are useful for names but poor for truth. Many listings are traders, and many factories list products they buy in. Treat every listing as a lead to be checked.
Where to build your long list
- Online B2B directories, filtered by city and product, give you many names quickly.
- Trade fairs in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Mumbai let you meet owners and see product quality in person.
- Local industry associations in Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Jamnagar publish member lists.
- Export promotion councils such as EEPC India list registered engineering exporters.
- Existing suppliers and component vendors often know who makes what in their cluster.
How to check each name
Start with paperwork, then move to the shop floor. Ask for the company's GST registration and its Importer Exporter Code, and check that the registered address matches the factory. Search the company name on the government's company register if it is a private limited firm.
Next, ask for a short video walk-through of the factory, filmed on the day you ask. Look for the machines that your part needs, work in progress, and staff at work. A dealer struggles to produce this at short notice.
Then ask technical questions that only a maker can answer. Which machine would run your part? Which processes are done outside? What is the cycle time? Vague answers usually mean the firm is buying in. Our article on telling a dealer from a manufacturer lists the signs in detail.
Visit before you commit
Nothing replaces a visit for a first order. A good visit checks capacity, inspection equipment, records and the honesty of the answers you were given. It also shows you whether key steps such as casting, heat treatment or plating are done in-house or by subcontractors.
Subcontracting is normal in Gujarat and is not a problem in itself. The problem is hidden subcontracting, where you think one firm controls quality and it does not. Ask to see the subcontractors for critical steps too. The factory audit checklist sets out what a full visit should cover.
Finally, ask for references from export customers in markets like yours. A factory that already ships to Europe or North America will understand inspection reports, packing rules and conformity documents. A factory that sells only in India may still be good, but expect to explain more and check more.
