Geotextiles from India: manufacturers and a first order

How to find geotextile manufacturers in India, brief them on the job, and run a first order with tests that prove the product meets your spec.

To buy geotextiles from India, tell the manufacturer the function (separation, filtration, drainage or reinforcement), the fabric type and the strength you need, then test a sample against your project specification. A geotextile manufacturer in India will quote against numbers, not against a general description.

Indian geotextile makers produce needle-punched non-woven, woven polypropylene and polyester fabrics for roads, railways, landfills, drainage and erosion control. Gujarat has plants in this field, linked to its non-woven and PP weaving base. Technical textiles made in Gujarat gives the wider picture.

What do you tell a geotextile manufacturer?

Start from the job, not the product name. The maker needs the following:

  • The function: separation, filtration, drainage, protection or reinforcement. Geotextile uses explained covers each.
  • Woven or non-woven. Woven versus non-woven geotextiles explains the trade-off.
  • Mass per unit area, tensile strength, puncture resistance and permeability targets.
  • Roll width, length and core, and whether UV exposure during construction is a concern.
  • The standard or project specification the fabric must meet.

How do you judge a manufacturer?

Ask for recent test reports on the exact grade, from the plant's own laboratory and an independent one. Check that the plant has a needle-punching line or wide looms, a laboratory with a tensile tester, and a record of roll traceability. A trader may offer lower quotes but cannot show you the line.

Look at the polymer source too. Virgin polypropylene or polyester gives predictable properties. Recycled fibre can be fine for some uses but changes strength, so the spec should say what is allowed.

Which tests should a first order include?

Tests depend on your standard. Common ones are wide-width tensile strength, puncture or CBR resistance, apparent opening size and water permeability. Geotextile tests explained shows what each measures. Agree the test method in the contract, because different methods give different numbers.

If the material goes into a European project, ask the broker and the project engineer whether CE marking or a declaration of performance is needed, and under which harmonised standard. Do not assume the manufacturer's certificate covers it.

How do you run a first order?

Request samples from a production roll, test them, then place a modest first order. Have rolls inspected for width, weight and defects before loading. Check roll wrapping, because geotextile left in the sun loses strength and gets dirty.

Prices depend on fibre, mass per unit area and volume. We do not publish figures, and a real quote needs your specification.

How should you handle storage and shipping?

Geotextiles are damaged by sunlight, moisture and mud. Rolls should be wrapped in opaque, UV-resistant film, each roll labelled with lot number, mass per unit area, width and length. Ask the plant to load rolls horizontally and not to stack them beyond the height they can bear.

On arrival, check that the wrapping is intact, the labels match the order and the rolls are not crushed. Keep a retained sample from every lot for any later dispute with the site engineer.
