Guar gum powder is usually packed in 25 kg bags: multiwall paper bags or woven polypropylene (PP) bags, in both cases with an inner polyethylene liner. Bags are often palletised and stretch-wrapped. Larger jumbo bags are used for some industrial and oilfield grades.
The aim is to keep moisture out and the powder clean. Guar absorbs moisture easily, and damp powder can lump, lose viscosity or grow mould.
Common pack formats
- 25 kg multiwall kraft paper bags with a PE liner: common for food grade.
- 25 kg woven PP bags with a PE liner: strong and widely used, especially for industrial grades.
- Laminated PP bags: give an extra moisture barrier.
- Jumbo bags (FIBCs), often 500 kg to 1,000 kg: for bulk industrial or oilfield buyers.
- Smaller packs or retail packs: possible from some plants, usually at a higher minimum order.
What to specify
If you need your own brand or a different pack size, see whether Indian suppliers can pack in your brand and pack size.
- Bag type, number of paper plies or PP fabric weight, and liner thickness.
- How the liner is closed: heat sealed or tied.
- Net weight per bag and allowed tolerance.
- Marking: product name, grade, batch number, production and best-before dates, net weight and origin.
- Palletisation: pallet type, bags per layer, height, stretch wrap and corner boards.
- Pallet treatment: heat-treated wood to ISPM 15 if wooden pallets are used.
Protecting the load
Sea transport from India can mean heat, humidity and long transit. Moisture comes from the air inside the container and from wooden pallets or the floor. Use dry pallets and clean, dry containers, and consider desiccant bags or container liners for long routes. Avoid loading on rainy days with bags left in the open.
Food grade bags should be clean and free from loose fibres, and stacked so that bags at the bottom are not crushed. The general risk is described in how to prevent condensation and mould in oilseed containers, and the same steps help with gums.
Hygiene and food contact
For food grade, the liner is the food contact layer. Ask for a declaration that it is suitable for food contact under the rules of your market. Bags should be stored off the floor in a clean area before use. Avoid reusing bags.
Checks at loading
- Count bags or pallets against the packing list.
- Check marks and batch numbers against the certificate of analysis.
- Weigh a sample of bags.
- Look for torn bags, damp patches or dust.
- Photograph the empty container, each stage of loading and the seal.
