Gold plating on imitation jewellery can last anywhere from a few weeks to several years, and thickness is the biggest single factor. The type of piece and how it is worn matter almost as much: a necklace worn to weddings lasts far longer than a ring worn every day.
The ranges below are approximate and meant for planning. They are not guarantees, and you should confirm the real performance of your own pieces with testing.
Approximate life by plating thickness
- Flash plating, a fraction of a micron: on high-contact areas it can wear within weeks to a few months of daily wear.
- Standard plating, around half a micron to a micron: often several months to around a year of regular wear before high-contact areas show.
- Heavy plating, a few microns or more: can last years with reasonable care, especially on pieces worn occasionally.
What else decides plating life
- Barrier layer: a proper layer between base metal and gold stops the base from migrating into the gold and dulling it.
- Surface preparation: poor cleaning before plating leads to peeling and spots, however thick the gold.
- Top coat: a lacquer or e-coat adds protection, especially in storage.
- Contact area: rings, bangles, clasps and earring posts wear first; pendants and earring fronts last longer.
- The wearer: sweat chemistry, perfume, swimming and sleeping in jewellery all shorten life.
Why thickness claims need checking
Microns are easy to quote and hard to see. Two pieces can look identical on day one while one has several times the gold of the other. An XRF reading on a sample from the bulk lot is the simplest way to check what you received.
Match the thickness to the price and use. Paying for heavy plating on a low-priced trend item rarely makes sense, while a bridal set or a ring sold at a premium needs enough gold to justify the price.
What to tell customers
Honest care instructions reduce returns. Tell customers to put jewellery on after perfume and lotion, take it off before swimming and showering, wipe it with a soft dry cloth and store it in a sealed bag.
Avoid promising a lifetime or a fixed number of years. Describe the plating accurately and let reviews build from pieces that perform.
What this means for a buyer
Choose a thickness for each line according to price and wear, write it into the order, and check it on the bulk lot. The guide to jewellery pricing shows how thickness changes the quote.
