HS codes for pumps, diesel engines and gensets

The HS headings for submersible pumps, diesel engines and diesel generating sets (gensets), how they split by size, and how to confirm your national code.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

The HS code for a diesel engine sits in heading 8408, a diesel genset in 8502, and a submersible pump in 8413. These four-digit headings are the same worldwide, but the digits after them differ by country, so treat the lists below as a starting point.

The code on your invoice sets the duty, the permits and the conformity checks. A wrong code is a common cause of delay, so agree it with your customs broker before the goods ship.

HS code for a diesel engine

Heading 8408 covers compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines, which are diesel and semi-diesel engines. Subheadings separate marine engines, engines for vehicles of Chapter 87, and other engines.

An engine for an agricultural pump set or a stationary power unit falls under the last group in most systems. If the engine is sold as part of a vehicle or tractor, the classification may change. Parts for these engines go under 8409. Read what diesel engines are made in Rajkot for the types.

HS code for a genset

A generating set, which is an engine coupled to an alternator, is classified in heading 8502 as an electric generating set. The subheadings for compression-ignition sets are split by output in kVA, with separate lines for smaller, mid-range and large sets.

The set is classified as a whole when it is imported assembled. If you import the engine and alternator separately, they go under their own headings, 8408 and 8501, unless the rules for incomplete or unassembled goods treat them as a set. This is a frequent source of disputes, so ask your broker.

HS code for a submersible pump

Pumps for liquids fall under heading 8413. Within it, submersible pumps with their motors are commonly classified under the centrifugal pump group, with other lines for reciprocating pumps, and parts. The exact subheading can depend on whether the pump has a measuring device, how it is driven and how it is described.

A pump supplied with a separate control panel or a variable frequency drive can raise a question about whether the panel is classified with the pump or separately. See pump types made in Gujarat.

How to confirm your national code

Start with the six-digit code, which is shared under the World Customs Organization system, and then add your country's extra digits from its official tariff. Use the technical specification and a brochure to match the description.

If you are unsure, ask your customs authority for a binding classification ruling, or ask your broker to check. Put the agreed code, the model number and the full description on the invoice and the packing list, in the same words. See how to find the HS code for a machine or part.

Rates for these headings vary by country and trade agreement, and are not given here. For the rules in your own market, check the official tariff.
