To import auto parts to the USA or the UK, you identify the parts by tariff code, confirm duty and any trade measures with a broker, make sure labelling and origin marking meet local rules, and check that the supplier holds the quality certification your customer expects. The shared steps are simple. The differences lie in duty treatment, labelling and what the buyer calls a compliant part.
Trade measures on auto parts have changed repeatedly, so check the current position with a customs broker, not an old article.
How to import auto parts: the general flow
Whether the parts are brake components, filters or castings, the flow is the same:
A short PPAP or first-article report from the supplier gives your quality team evidence before the first volume order, and it avoids a dispute later about what was agreed.
- Define the part by drawing or OEM reference and the vehicle application.
- Choose a manufacturer with a relevant quality system, ideally IATF 16949.
- Approve samples against the drawing and the material specification.
- Agree packing, labelling and barcode requirements.
- Ship with a complete document pack and clear customs through your broker.
United States: duty, origin and safety
In the USA, the importer of record is responsible for classification, value and country-of-origin marking. Imported parts must usually show their origin, and the exact marking rules depend on the part.
Safety-critical parts such as brakes, tyres and lighting may be subject to federal vehicle safety rules, and the manufacturer may have to certify conformity. Check which of your parts are covered. For the wider duty picture, read tariffs on Indian auto parts in the US and EU.
If you are selling into the aftermarket, check whether your part carries an OEM trademark. Parts that copy a brand's markings can be seized at the border, and your supplier cannot protect you from that. Use your own brand or a neutral marking.
United Kingdom: conformity and marking
The UK has its own conformity regime for vehicle parts, separate from the EU's, and some parts need type approval markings. Ask your customer or approval body which approvals apply, and check them before ordering.
UK customs also requires correct origin and value declarations. If you hold stock in the UK for sale to garages, check consumer and product safety rules on labelling and instructions.
Labelling and barcodes
Labelling is where Indian parts are most often refused or delayed. The label should carry part number, batch or date code, country of origin and the importer's details where required. Many distributors also insist on a barcode scheme; see auto parts labelling and barcoding.
Agree label artwork and carton markings in writing before production, because relabelling in a UK or US warehouse costs time.
Warranty is a separate topic. Agree in writing who handles a returned part in the USA or the UK, and what the supplier credits you if a batch fails.
