Importing industrial salt from India into China and East Asia

Salt importers in East Asia buy Indian industrial salt in bulk by vessel. Here is how the import works, from purity to loading, and what to check first.

To import salt from India to China or elsewhere in East Asia, you will normally buy industrial salt in bulk on a chartered or part-chartered vessel, from solar salt works in Gujarat. Salt importers in East Asia mostly use it for the chlor-alkali industry, so the purity and moisture figures matter more than the colour.

How to import industrial salt comes down to four things: the specification, the loading port, the vessel arrangement, and the import rules in your own country.

What specification should industrial salt meet?

Industrial users care about sodium chloride content, moisture, insoluble matter and the calcium, magnesium and sulphate levels. Industrial salt purity explains typical ranges and why chlor-alkali plants set tight limits on calcium and magnesium.

Put each figure in the contract with a test method and a tolerance. Ask for the sampling method to be named, since salt in a pile varies from top to bottom and a poor sample misleads both sides.

How is salt shipped from Gujarat to East Asia?

Large buyers take bulk cargo, loaded at a Gujarat port by conveyor or grab. Smaller buyers use containers with bags or jumbo bags. How salt is shipped compares the two.

Bulk cargo needs a vessel booking, a surveyor at loading, and discharge capacity at your port. Salt is corrosive, so it also matters which holds and equipment are used. Ask your forwarder or broker to confirm port restrictions at both ends.

What does the buyer need in the destination country?

Import rules for salt differ widely. Some countries restrict industrial or edible salt through state control, quota or licensing. Confirm with your customs broker or the relevant ministry whether you need a licence, a quota allocation or a registered end-user, and which tariff classification applies.

Do not assume the rule that applies to one East Asian country applies to another. We state no duty figure here, because duties and quotas change and must be checked at source.

Where do cargoes go wrong?

Typical problems are moisture picked up from rain at loading, a mismatch between the sampled lot and the cargo, and a draft survey that does not agree with the bill of lading. Each can be reduced:

  • Appoint an independent surveyor to supervise loading and take composite samples.
  • Agree the draft survey method and who pays for it before the vessel arrives.
  • Specify which results are binding, the load port or the discharge port analysis, and how disputes go to an umpire laboratory.
  • Keep samples sealed and retained by both parties.

Which Gujarat sources should you look at?

Most Indian industrial salt comes from the Kutch coast and the Saurashtra shoreline. Export markets for Gujarat salt and bentonite gives the wider picture. Check the producer's real capacity and port access, not just a sales office address.

How should you plan a first bulk cargo?

For a first cargo, start with a clear volume tolerance, a loading window and a named surveyor. Salt cargoes are weighed by draft survey, so agree the tolerance for the difference between load and discharge figures before the vessel sails.

Then plan the discharge. Confirm berth availability, grab or conveyor capacity and covered storage. Salt left in the open absorbs rain, and a cargo that arrives dry can be spoiled after discharge. These details are cheaper to settle in the contract than at the quay.
